~ Differences/disputes amongst the Shias ~

The narrator says,

I said to Abu Jafar Imam Baqir (عليه السلام),

"I left your followers differing/disputing with one another and disassociating [doing Tabarra] from each other."

The Imam said, "What do you have to do with that? People have only been tasked with three obligations:

Recognition of the Imams,
Submission to the Imams in what reaches them from the Imam,
And referring back to them in matters wherein they differ/disagree."

Narrated that Abu Jafar Imam Baqir (عليه السلام) said,

"I had gone with my Father (i.e. Ali ibn Husain (عليه السلام) to the Ka'bah and He prayed at red marble between the 2 columns and then said:

"In this place the people made a contract, that if the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله) died or was killed, they would never ever let the command (i.e. Khilafat) return to anyone from His AhlulBayt (عليهم السلام)"

I (i.e. Imam Baqir (عليه السلام) asked, "And Who were those people?"

Imam Ali ibn Husain (عليه السلام) said, "The first one (Abu Bakr), the second one (Umar), Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah and Salim bin al-Habebah."

~ Test your children by love for Imam Ali (as) ~

Narrated that Jabir ibn Abdullah ibn Haram al-Ansari said:

We were with the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله) one day - a group among the Ansar - and he said to us:

"O assembly of Ansar, test [the legitimacy of] your children by their love for Ali ibn Abi Talib (عليه السلام) - so whoever loves him, know that he was born lawfully, and whoever hates him, know that he was born unlawfully."

From the Dua taught by Imam Mahdi (عليه السلام) that reached us through the first Safeer of the Imam:

You, O Lord, are the One who removes evil, and answers the distressed when he calls upon You, and saves from the great affliction.

So remove O Lord, the harm/suffering from Your Guardian [Wali], and make him a successor/caliph on Your earth, as You have guaranteed for him"

Narrated that Imam Jafar bin Muhammad Sadiq (عليهما السلام) said,

"Test our Shia on three things:

At the times of prayer, how well they safeguard them.
Regarding their secrets, how they guard them against our enemies.
And with respect to their wealth, how they share it with their brothers (in faith)."

"We are the ones through whom Allah (عز وجل) sends down mercy, through whom the rainfall is granted, and through whom punishment is averted from you."

"So, whoever recognizes us, recognises us, acknowledges our right, and takes hold of our command is from us and [returns] to us."

~ The will of Allah ~

Narrated from Safwan ibn Yahya who said,

I asked Abu al-Hasan Imam Kazim (عليه السلام), "Inform me about the will (iradah) of Allah and of His creatures."

The Imam (عليه السلام) replied:

"The will of His creatures comes from inner reflection (al-ḍamir) and what manifests to them after that as action.

As for Allah (تعالى), His will is His bringing into existence and nothing else, for He does not deliberate, intend, or reflect—and these attributes are negated from Him, as they are the attributes of creation.

Thus, the will of Allah is His act, nothing else. He says to it, 'Be,' and it comes into existence—without word, without utterance of the tongue, without inclination, and without reflection. Nor is there a state/condition (kayf) for his will, just as there is no state/condition for His self."

Narrate that Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله) said,

"The one who opposes Ali ibn Abi Talib (عليه السلام) after me is a disbeliever [kafir].

And the one who associates partners with him (in leadership ordained by Allah) is an associator [Mushrik].

The one who loves him is a believer, and the one who hates him is a hypocrite.

The one who follows his path is one who attains (the truth), and the one who wars against him deviates (from the right path).

The one who rejects him perishes.

Ali (عليه السلام) is the light of Allah in His lands and His proof upon His servants.

Ali (عليه السلام) is the sword of Allah against His enemies and the inheritor of the knowledge of His prophets.

Ali (عليه السلام) is the exalted word of Allah, and the word of His enemies is the lowest.

Ali (عليه السلام) is the master of the successors (of the prophets) and the successor of the master of the prophets.

Ali (عليه السلام) is the Commander of the Believers (Amir al-Momineen), the leader of those with shining faces, and the Imam of the Muslims.

Narrated that Abu Abd-Allah Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) said,

"The best among you are the generous ones, and the worst among you are the stingy ones. Among the purest forms of faith is showing goodness to your brothers [in faith] and striving to fulfill their needs.

Indeed, the one who is good to his brothers [in faith] is loved by the Most Merciful [Allah]. And in doing so, there is the humiliation of Satan, distancing away from the Fire, and an entry into Paradise.

The Imam then said,

O Jamil [the narrator] - convey this to the most finest [best] of your companions."

I [the narrator] asked, "May I be sacrificed for you, who are the most finest of my companions?"

The Imam replied, "They are the ones who show goodness to their brothers [in faith] in times of both hardship and ease."

Then the Imam added, "O Jamil, it is easy for someone who has much [wealth] to do this, but Allah (عز وجل) has praised those who have little [yet still give], so Allah says in His Book - 'They prefer them over themselves, even though they are in poverty [lacking basic needs]. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul—it is those who will be the successful.' (59:9)"

~ Know your religion from the Quran ~

Narrated that Abu AbdAllah Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) said,

"Indeed, whoever knows his religion from the Book of Allah (عز وجل), the mountains would be removed [from their places] before he sways [from the truth], and whoever enters into a matter with ignorance will exit from it with ignorance."

And the saying of Allah (عز وجل):
"O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you" (4:59)

And the saying of Allah (تبارك وتعالى): "Your guardian is only Allah and His Messenger and those who have believed - those who establish prayer and give zakat while they bow" (5:55)

And the saying of Allah (جل جلاله):
"But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Prophet], a judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort/dislike from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission" (4:65)

And the saying of Allah (عز وجل):
"O Messenger, deliver that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people" (5:67)

And from that is the saying of the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله) to Ali (عليه السلام): "Of whomsoever I am his Master [Mawla], Ali is his Master [Mawla]. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him and be an enemy to whoever is an enemy to him, and support whoever supports him and forsake/leave whoever forsakes/leaves him, and love whoever loves him and hate whoever hates him."

~ The nine things given to Imam Ali (as) ~

Narrated from Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) that Amir al-Mominin Ali ibn Abi Talib (عليه السلام) said,

By Allah, Allah (تبارك وتعالى) has granted me nine things that He did not grant to anyone before me, except the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله):

1) The paths have been opened for me,

2) I have been taught genealogies,

3) The clouds have been made to flow/move for me,

4) I have been taught [the knowledge of] appointed deaths (al-Manaya) and tribulations (al-Balaya),

5) and decisive speech (Fasl al-Khitab).

6) I have looked into the spiritual realm (Malakut) by the permission of my Lord, so nothing that occurred before me nor anything that comes after me is hidden from me.

7) And through my divine authority/guardianship (Wilayah), Allah perfected for this nation their religion.

8) And completed His favors upon them,

9) And approved [be satisfied with] their Islam, as He said on the Day of Wilayah to Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وآله) - "O Muhammad, inform them that today I have perfected for them their religion, approved Islam for them as a religion, and completed My favor upon them."

All of that is from the grace of Allah upon me, so to Him belongs all praise."

~ Love for the sake of Allah and Hate for the sake of Allah ~

Narrated from Imam Hasan ibn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Musa ibn Jafar ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (عليه السلام) from His father, from his forefathers (عليهم السلام) that the Prophet of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله) said to one of His companions one day,

"O servant of Allah! Love for the sake of Allah, hate for the sake of Allah, befriend for the sake of Allah, and take as an enemy for the sake of Allah.

For indeed, you will not attain the guardianship (Wilayah) of Allah except through that.

And no man will find the true taste of faith—even if his prayers and fasting are abundant—until he becomes like that.

Yet most of the brotherhood among people in these days of yours has become based on worldly affairs: for its sake they love one another, and for its sake they hate one another, and that will not avail them against Allah in the least."

The companion said to the Prophet (ص), "How can I know that I have befriended and have enmity for the sake of Allah (عز وجل), and who is the friend of Allah (عز وجل) so that I may befriend him, and who is His enemy so that I may have enmity with him?"

The Prophet of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله) pointed to Ali (عليه السلام) and said, "Do you see Him?"

The companion said, "Yes."

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله) said, "The friend of this one is the friend of Allah, so befriend him. And the enemy of this one is the enemy of Allah, so have enmity with him. And befriend the friend of His, even if he is the killer of your father and your son. And take as an enemy the enemy of him even if he is your father and your son."

~ Tawalla and Tabarra in our Gatherings ~

Narrated that Abu Abd-Allah Imam Sadiq (عليه السلام) said:

Do you sit together in a place, conversing with one another, saying whatever you wish, disassociating [tabarra] from whomever you wish, and aligning with [tawalla] whomever you wish?"

I (narrator) said, "Yes."

The Imam said, "Is life [worth living] anything other than this?"
