John Collison:
"A lot of people are trying to put big models on the device. But the DRAM constraints right now are real, right?"
Sam Altman:
"Yeah. Look, putting a huge amount of DRAM in everyone’s phone or laptop is such a terrible use of global capital and manufacturing right now. Because what is the utilization rate of a phone? Like 5%? Maybe even less in terms of active model execution.
If you have a severe bottleneck on DRAM and memory manufacturing, you want that silicon running at 100% duty cycle in a data center serving thousands of people, not sitting idle in someone’s pocket 95% of the day.
Right now, the market is completely starved for compute and memory, and the 'invisible hand' is not clearing the market as quickly as you’d hope. Capital allocation into memory fabs has lagged behind where the actual demand curve is going, so every bit of memory we produce needs to be centralized where it gets maximum utilization."

John Collison:
"Why aren't higher prices pulling in more supply? Why isn't the market solving this?"
Sam Altman:
"I think the invisible hand is failing right now. For decades, DRAM makers would invest something like $20 billion in CapEx just to make $19 billion back. They lived through brutal boom-and-bust cycles where building too many fabs pushed them right to the edge of bankruptcy. So now, even while they're on track to generate something like $100 billion in free cash flow, they all remember their history. They remember almost going bust by overbuilding, so they're being extremely cautious about pouring tens of billions into new fabs."
