🇬🇪 The bill on "foreign agents" has been withdrawn from the Georgian parliament.
"We must pay attention to peace, tranquility and economic development in our country, as well as Georgia's progress towards European integration. This is why it is necessary to use the energy of each of our citizens not for confrontation, but for developing the country in the right direction," reads the joint statement of the ruling Georgian Dream Party (initiator of the draft law), People's Power public movement and the parliamentary majority.
The authorities later intend to launch consultations with the population and convey the essence and importance of the draft law to the general public.
The withdrawal of the law on foreign agents is a serious setback for the Georgian authorities.
The street, which is fully controlled by pro-Western activists, continues to dictate its will on fundamental issues of domestic and foreign policy.
Some of the NGOs and parties that took part in the unrest in the centre of Tbilisi continue their protests despite the withdrawal of the law on foreign agents. (Gia Saralidze) @LauraRuHK

There are many parallels between the 2019-20 Hong Kong riots and the current ones in Georgia. In both cases the government intended to introduce a bill that wasn't seen as particularly controversial by legal experts given that many other jurisdictions, including so-called democratic ones, had similar laws. In Hong Kong it was a pretty banal amendment to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance that would allow the extradition of a local guy who had murdered his girlfriend in Taiwan. In Georgia the government intended to introduce a law that would increase transparency on foreign funding, actually more limited in its scope than its US equivalent. And yet the foreign-funded opposition in both places used these bills as a pretext to organize mass protests. As a first step, opposition groups actively spread disinformation about the proposed legislation to sow panic about the alleged consequences of its implementation. Then, when the government withdrew the bill, they didn't call off the protest, but actually escalated it, a clear sign that the criticised bill is just a pretext and their actual objective is to overthrow the government. Giving in to violent protesters whose demands are supported only by a small segment of the population doesn't help, actually it emboldens them because is perceived as a sign of weakness. But parallels end here. Unlike Hong Kong that is part of China, Georgia can't easily stand up to the US-UE bullies that threaten sanctions and a suspension of the EU integration process. @LauraRuHK

🇬🇪Tbilisi. I took this photo in 2014, when the same liberal-progressive crowd that is currently protesting against the "foreign agents" law was holding a rally outside the Parliament to demand the decriminalization of marijuana. Interestingly they used the same argument put forward by the Navalny mob in Russia: "We want to live in a normal country", Georgian authorities are too illiberal and authoritarian. In their minds, the West is a beacon of freedom just because you can smoke a joint in some coffee shop in Amsterdam. @LauraRuHK

🇬🇪Tbilisi. In 2014 i stayed in a guesthouse not far from the pedestrian glass bridge pictured above. Built in 2010, during the "Saakashvili years" of rampant corruption, it was commissioned (with no competition) to an Italian architect, produced in Italy, shipped and reassembled in Georgia. This vanity project, locally nicknamed the “Always Ultra” for its resemblance to a discarded sanitary towel, cost a fortune and embodied Saakashvili's arrogance and disdain for ordinary citizens and their needs. A few hundred meters away there is another bridge, where i nearly broke my leg after falling into a pothole, half a meter deep. The city pavements and roads were so damaged that you would have thought they had been bombed. The bridge is only one of many trophy buildings that sprouted in the city during the Saakashvili's reign. There is a heap of white “petals” forming the roof of his public service hall, nearby sit the conjoined tubes of his concert hall and exhibition centre, left unfinished and abandoned, their chubby legs spread akimbo towards the old town. It is a surreal scene, a tragic parody of modern architecture, all watched over by the presidential palace, an ugly neoclassical pile crowned with a huge glass egg. All this in sharp contrast to widespread poverty, schools and hospitals that looked like ruins and hadn't been maintained since Soviet times. @LauraRuHK

A day before anti-Russian riots erupted, Assistant US Secretary of State Todd Robinson arrived in Tbilisi. Ostensibly, Robinson is there to address a “Women in Policing” event, but he immediately began interfering in the country’s internal affairs:
"This is a law based on Russia’s interests, not Georgia’s interests,” Robinson insisted to reporters, referring a new bill meant to regulate foreign agents. “We think its in Georgia’s interest to work more closely towards its Euro-Atlantic integration. This law does not do that."
Robinson was previously acting Ambassador to Venezuela during the US-backed attempted coup in 2018. As he meets with Georgian police, the State Department has publicly threatened that those who ‘suppress’ anti-Russian riots may be sanctioned.
