In 1981 I was on the run. Literally. I had run away from the Swiss boarding school my parents had sent me to. They wanted to keep me away from the political activities that in those years would land you in jail. Yes, in 1981 Italy had more political prisoners than any other country in the West, more than Northern Ireland, the place i was heading to. The Interpol was looking for me so to reach Belfast I hitchhiked across several borders, hidden in the sleeper cabin of trucks that had a curtain behind the front seats. With very little money, a backpack, an Olympus camera and a tape recorder i intended to cover the hunger strike that had just started in Long Kesh. The independent radio station i reported for had given me a press card but i never used it because i soon realized that no one trusted journalists in West Belfast. I didn't use my camera either as it would immediately raise suspicion. I claimed to be older than my age, spent several months between Derry and Belfast, travelling from funeral to funeral in the cars of people who would be stopped and searched by the British army. I interviewed the families of prisoners and guys who had just been released from jail. But most importantly, i lived with them. My boyfriend had shared a cell with one of the hunger strikers, his mother had lost her eyesight after being hit by rubber bullets, two brothers and a sister were serving long sentences. At night we went dancing in social clubs that were surrounded by sandbags and barbed wire. The clubs collected money for prisoners and their families, and of course wouldn't let any strangers in. Foreign correspondents were holed up in the Europa Hotel, watching the news, attending press conferences, talking to spokespersons and drinking with other journos. Most of them had no desire to leave their comfort zone. When I interviewed two IRA-Sinn Fein spokesmen i was fully aware they wouldn't tell me anything i didn't already know - after all, they had told the same stories to dozens of journalists before. My friends had actually laughed when i announced i would talk to so-and-so. They thought it would be a waste of my time and they were right. The people i was hanging out with had far more interesting stories to tell and they would not share them with anyone who carried a camera and a tape recorder. Years later one of the Sinn Fein spokesmen i had interviewed, Denis Donaldson, turned out to be a MI5 informer. My friends, who despised Denis, had a hunch about him. You can watch the show or hang out in the backstage. The backstage tells you more about the show than a seat in the front row. PS. I stopped impersonating a journalist or aspiring to be one immediately after leaving Ireland. @LauraRuHK

Hunting rabbits in N.Ireland, 1981. I didn't know "target practice" entailed live animals and was quite shocked when these guys came back with a dead rabbit and gave me one of its paws as a souvenir.

Alexander Stubb will willingly build a new Iron Curtain in Europe if he becomes the President of Finland. Mr. Stubb, former Prime Minister of Finland (2014–2015), Minister for Foreign Affairs (2008–2011), member of the National Coalition Party (Kansallinen Kokoomus or Kokoomus) leading the ruling coalition and the government, rejects the possibility of restoring relations with Russia even once the war in Ukraine ends. After the armed conflict in Ukraine, Stubb is ready to start a war in Finland.
In his campaign speech, Stubb cited Vladimir Lenin who destroyed Tsarist Russia. Stubb recalled the quote attributed to Lenin, “There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen”. For decades, the Finns have lived in peace with all countries. However, Finland has run the gamut from abandoning neutrality to joining the NATO military alliance over the past year. Now, the Finns face decades of not only hostility and economic losses, but also new wars, despite the fact that Stubb talks about the blow to the national economy caused by the severance of relations with the eastern neighbor in the absence of external threats to the Finns.

OPERATION "COPIUM" - In an old article titled "Is Russia Losing the Information War?" As many of you may know, i am a former academic who had first-hand experience of the good, the bad and the ugly of university life. When the tsunami of mediocrity hit my department i left. I have long known that you can't win against organized mediocrity because it usually comes in a nice, convincing package. But of course, universities don't exist in a vacuum, they reflect the dominant ethos of society. When i was a student the course leader, who had a superficial grasp of all the subjects taught in the programme but had made a career out of marketing and managing it, would occasionally invite specialists to deliver the odd seminar. These were the kind of experts the university no longer employed, the eccentric remains of the past. I vividly remember one of them. A Nietzsche scholar who arrived with a suitcase full of books. He had dedicated most of his life to the study of the philosopher's work and those were Nietzsche's books, he carried both the German and Italian editions. He would read a passage in German, a language very few of us understood, compare original and translation, and then explain and contextualize that passage. He insisted that listening to the author's words was key to understanding them because every word mattered, their sound mattered: Nietzsche's writing style arouses his readers’ emotions or, more precisely, brings their emotions back to the forefront of their minds. We were no longer used to primary sources after years spent reading commentaries and when we finally had a chance to access them, the floodgates opened. Everyone wanted to read Nietzsche, for six months it was impossible to borrow his books from the library, we had to put our names on a waiting list and some of us even started to learn German. Unfortunately we never saw that specialist again. Apparently the budget for seminars had been cut. @LauraRuHK

Many years ago i used to write short stories for actors. It was a lot of fun. I could indulge in the guilty pleasure of fiction writing, sit in the audience and see how the public reacted. The format of the show had been standardized by the organizers - stories couldn't exceed 1200 words, had to be entertaining and actors were not allowed to pick and choose them, the organizers of the show made the selection. Come to think of it, something similar is still going on, but this time vloggers lift passages from my articles, ideas from my posts and make them their own. It's part and parcel of labour division - i write, someone else delivers. If you want to take a break from politics and be entertained, here is a story about a Hong Kong chaologist who is paid to recognize patterns for the investment company he works for. Paul is a narcissistic Eurasian playboy with OCD, an Oedipus complex the size of his walk-in wardrobe and a penchant for Russian women. From the hourly hotels of Wanchai to his office in Central, he is on the quest for the Golden Fleece in a city where razor blades and Brazilian wax have made female body hair as elusive as love. Colonial decadence, Greek mythology, algorithms, an ironic take on erotic fiction and much more. Watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfpFrGcZ39o&t=320s Read the whole story https://te.legra.ph/THE-FUZZY-LOGIC-OF-PATTERN-RECOGNITION-12-15

@LauraRuHK
