πŸ“˜ XML vs JSON β€” The Language of Machine-Readable Science

A concise academic deep dive into architecture, scalability, and the shift from markup to meaning β€” and why science must become understandable by machines, not just readable by humans.

ScienceArray is an experiment in AI-native academic publishing β€” built for transparent, semantic, and ML-driven knowledge synthesis.

At ML in Health Science, we’ve been building advanced retrieval-driven AI since β‘‘β“ͺβ‘‘β‘£, focused not on generic documents but on the entire ecosystem of scientific evidence.

While classical πŸ…‘πŸ…πŸ…– retrieves text chunks, our scientific multi-layer πŸ…‘πŸ…πŸ…– protocol β€” β˜ΈοΈπ—¦π—”π—œπ— π—¦π—”π—₯𝗔 β€” goes further: it acts as a true AI agent that searches PubMed, Europe PMC, and Semantic Scholar, extracts structured data from every relevant study, and performs automated meta-analysis for each clinical question.

π™π™π™š π™œπ™€π™–π™‘ π™žπ™¨ π™¨π™žπ™’π™₯π™‘π™š:
turn global biomedical knowledge into clear, evidence-based insights that help improve patient outcomes.

We believe this is the next step for AI in healthcare β€” from retrieving information to understanding science.

Early detection of retinal disease is the key to preventing irreversible vision loss for the 2.2 billion people suffering from vision impairment globally. We are pleased to highlight a significant new study published in the latest MLHS issue.
In their paper, authors Foma Molchanov and Sukhwant Pal evaluate the DenseNet201 architecture for multi-class retinal disease classification using the benchmark OCT2017 dataset.

Why this matters for clinical AI:
- Performance: The model achieved a 96.69% mean accuracy and a 0.9531 F1-score, demonstrating superior stability and generalization.
- Clinical Trust: With an Expected Calibration Error (ECE) of only 0.0112, the model provides reliable probability estimates that clinicians can trust for decision support.
- Overcoming Class Imbalance: By implementing class-weighted focal loss, the researchers successfully addressed the challenge of detecting subtle Drusen deposits, which are often misclassified as healthy tissue.

This work underscores the power of transfer learning and specialized loss functions in medical imaging. Congratulations to the authors on their contribution to the field!
