📉‼AI fears and oil spike drag Wall Street lower
S&P 500: 7,659.44 (-1.1%)
Nasdaq-100: 29,187.55 (-2.5%)
DJIA: 52,002.41 (-0.3%)
Eurostoxx: 6,204.23(+0.6%)
U.S. crude futures: $99.02 (+1.1%)
Spot Gold (XAU/USD): $4,165.42 (-0.1%)
Wall Street fell sharply on Friday, with the Nasdaq down 2.15% and the S&P 500 off 1.10%, driven by renewed pressure on AI-related stocks like CoreWeave and Broadcom amid concerns that heavily indebted AI infrastructure companies may not generate profits in time to service their debt. A 3%-plus surge in oil prices added to investor caution, with high energy costs seen as a drag on equity valuations and a reason for traders to reduce risk heading into the weekend. Markets are also pricing in unchanged Fed rates this month, though Barclays now expects 25bp hikes in both December and January, as inflation data continues to run hotter than expected.

❓Trading warrants over NIKKEI 225, NASDAQ-100 and S&P 500? Here's why futures matter
Investors trading structured warrants over the NIKKEI 225 (NIKKEI), NASDAQ-100® (NDX), and S&P 500® (SP500) may have noticed that these products continue to trade actively during Malaysian market hours, even when the underlying cash equity markets are closed.
The reason lies in the futures market. Futures linked to the NASDAQ-100 and S&P 500 trade for around 23 hours a day, while SGX Nikkei 225 futures are available for almost 22 hours daily.
Macquarie's structured warrants over these global indices track the relevant futures contracts rather than the spot index levels. Because market makers hedge using these futures contracts, bid and offer prices can continue to be quoted for much of the Bursa Malaysia trading session (refer to the market-making hours shown at the bottom of our Live Matrix tool).
For U.S. indices in particular, futures trading spans both the regular and overnight trading sessions, allowing global developments, economic releases and market-moving news to be reflected in prices as they occur rather than when the underlying cash market reopens.

On a separate note, bullish investors seeking leveraged exposure to Malaysian stocks may consider call warrants as an alternative avenue to trading the underlying shares directly. Structured warrants typically require a smaller initial capital outlay and may generate magnified percentage returns when the underlying shares move in the anticipated direction. Investors may also select from warrants with different exercise prices, effective gearing levels and expiry dates to match their market outlook and risk appetite, although leverage can similarly magnify losses if the underlying shares move unfavourably.

🌧️📉 Market Colour: Asia retreats despite Wall Street rebound, AI spending concerns linger
- Asian stocks declined on Tuesday, breaking from a chip-led rally on Wall Street that helped the Nasdaq-100 recover from its worst week since the tariff turmoil of April 2025.
- The MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell 0.6%, with eight of its 11 subgroups in the red and three shares declining for every one that advanced. South Korea's Kospi led losses, dropping more than 2% (The Business times, 20 Oct).
- The Hang Seng Index (HSI) fell around 1.0% to approximately 23,960 as Hong Kong equities resumed trading after Monday's public holiday, with technology services and retail shares bearing the brunt of selling. Technology stocks remained under pressure amid ongoing concerns over AI infrastructure financing, elevated borrowing costs, and uncertainty over whether heavy capital expenditure will deliver sufficient returns (Trading Economics, 20 Oct).
- China held its benchmark lending rates steady at 3.00% and 3.50%, offering no fresh monetary easing. Stronger-than-expected third-quarter GDP growth reduced the immediate case for stimulus, though sectoral data remained mixed, retail trade fell 2.01% and producer manufacturing declined 1.4%, while energy minerals (+0.2%) and electronic technology (+0.3%) provided limited offset (Trading Economics, 20 Oct).
- In Japan, SGX Nikkei 225 futures were down 0.2% at 64,770 at the time of writing, with the Japan cash index opening Tuesday's session 0.66% lower, extending a pullback from earlier monthly highs. The Bank of Japan is edging closer to formally declaring that underlying inflation has reached its 2% target, a threshold that signals further policy normalisation and keeps the yen firm. Yen strength directly compresses the overseas earnings of the export-heavy companies that dominate the index (247wallst, 20 Oct).
- Put warrants over the HSI are the top-performing index warrants as at the time of writing.

⚡ Fresh catalysts emerge for Xiaomi and Meituan as Hong Kong reopens
– Here are the latest news and share price catalysts for Xiaomi and Meituan as the Hong Kong shares reopen after a long weekend:
– Xiaomi: the stock had seen three-day of consecutive gains amounting to 10% from 13 Oct to 15 Oct, notably on volume that was triple the 20-day average last Thurs
– The share price boost came on the back of strong demand for its newly launched SkyNomad SUV, with more than 70,000 orders in the first month
– While the SkyNomad ranks belows the 240,000 orders for its YU7 SUV launched last year, investors viewed the SkyNomad order numbers positively given the significantly weaker demand of EVs in the Chinese market this year (Bloomberg)
– Xiaomi had also repurchased around 2.5 million shares at HKD 24.32 to 24.58 on 12 Oct which some investors may perceive as a near-term share price floor
– Despite the strong 10% price surge last week, Xiaomi's share price is still down 32.2% year-to-date
– Macquarie's Xiaomi call warrant, XIAOMI-C46, costs RM0.205 with Xiaomi trading at HKD 27.26 and will move approximately 5% for a 1% move in Xiaomi shares (based on its effective gearing level at 2:52PM)
– Meituan: made its biggest intraday gain since July with a 7% intraday surge to HKD78 last week on 14 Oct, also on volume triple its 20-day average, the buying rush in the Chinese internet company comes ahead of the 11.11 Singles Day event
– In other recent news, Meituan's overseas food delivery arm Keeta tripled its Brazil coverage to 32 cities (from 11), with 83,000 registered restaurants and 430,000 riders - a positive signal for international growth optionality (Yicai)
– Macquarie's Meituan call warrant, MEITUAN-C43, costs RM0.115 while Meituan shares are trading at HKD 75.55 this afternoon, and moves approximately 6% for a 1% move in Meituan shares (based on its effective gearing level at 2:52PM)

🛢️🔥Oil futures extend four-month rally as HIBISCS and PCHEM advance
Oil futures have steadily gained over the past four months, with the upward momentum becoming more pronounced in October as geopolitical uncertainty and concerns over near-term supply availability kept energy markets supported.
Malaysian oil and gas-related counters have broadly moved higher. Hibiscus Petroleum (HIBISCS) shares rose from RM2.12 at end-September, to RM2.37 as of yesterday, representing a month-to-date gain of approximately 11%. Petronas Chemicals (PCHEM) similarly advanced from RM4.18 to RM4.49, gaining approximately 7% over the same period.
With both counters benefiting from improving sentiment towards the energy sector, investors with a constructive view on HIBISCS and PCHEM may gain leveraged exposure through their respective call warrants, which cost a fraction of the underlying share prices.

📉 Hang Seng Index reverses early advance as stimulus hopes fade
– The Hang Seng Index (HSI) opened higher today, supported by bargain hunting after Tuesday’s 1.3% decline and improved sentiment towards artificial-intelligence stocks. Optimism was partly driven by a stronger revenue outlook from Super Micro Computer, which provided some relief to the broader technology sector (Trading Economics, 21 October).
– However, the early advance proved short-lived, with the benchmark subsequently reversing into negative territory. As at the time of writing, the index was trading near 23,800 points, down approximately 0.3% from its previous close.
– The reversal came as investors remained cautious over China’s policy outlook. The People’s Bank of China kept its benchmark lending rates unchanged for a 17th consecutive month, leaving the one-year loan prime rate at 3.00% and the five-year rate at 3.50%. The decision reinforced expectations that policymakers are in no rush to introduce further monetary easing after the economy expanded by a better-than-expected 4.5% year-on-year in the third quarter. (Reuters, 20 October).
– Investors actively traded HSI call warrants as the index reversed its earlier gains. HSI-CWWK emerged as the most actively traded call warrant in the market, with 53.8M units changing hands, while HSI-CWU2 ranked second with 36.7M units traded. Both warrants are currently priced at/below RM0.120 on the bid, allowing investors to gain leveraged exposure to movements in the HSI futures with a relatively low capital outlay.
– Following the decline in the HSI futures, the bid prices of both warrants fell by between 8% and 11%. The pullback offers bullish investors a lower entry price should they expect the index to rebound, although further weakness in the HSI futures could result in additional losses. HSI-CWWK expires in December 2026, providing investors with more time to trade their short-to medium-term view while experiencing relatively lower time decay than shorter-dated warrants, all else being equal.
– Net-position data indicated a bullish tilt, with investors recording net purchases of 5.1M units of HSI-CWU2.
– On the put side, trading activity was comparatively lighter, with HSI-PWXF recording 4.2M units traded. Both HSI-CWWK and HSI-PWXF are tagged as trending index warrants which investors may find on our homepage or via our Warrant Search Tool.

Nasdaq-100: 29,822.52 (+1.1%)
DJIA: 52,856.09 (+0.7%)
Eurostoxx: 6,207.52 (+1.4%)
U.S. crude futures: $97.15 (-0.7%)
Spot Gold (XAU/USD): $4,141.02 (+0.4%)
Wall Street advanced on Wednesday as encouraging corporate earnings restored confidence in the artificial-intelligence (AI) trade, overshadowing lingering concerns over elevated interest rates and geopolitical risks. Technology led the rally after SpaceX reported its first profit as a listed company, while Super Micro Computer issued an upbeat revenue and margin outlook. Their results helped ease recent concerns over whether heavy AI infrastructure spending can generate sufficient returns, lifting the S&P 500 technology sector by 1.6% (Reuters, 21 October). However, macroeconomic risks remained in focus. Treasury yields rose late in the session after renewed Middle East tensions pushed WTI crude towards US$98.50 per barrel, reviving concerns that energy-driven inflation could keep Federal Reserve policy restrictive.

📉 HSI extends decline as technology and battery stocks come under pressure
– The Hang Seng Index (HSI) futures fell sharply on Thursday, declining by as much as 2.7% to 23,019 as persistent weakness in technology and battery-related stocks weighed on the Hong Kong market. The decline extended the index’s losses after it closed 0.9% lower on Wednesday.
– Sentiment remained under pressure following a sharp sell-off in Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) in the previous session, after the electric-vehicle battery manufacturer reported slower third-quarter profit growth amid intense industry competition and weaker automobile sales in China (Trading Economics, 22 October).
– Losses were broad-based among index heavyweights, with Tencent, Lenovo, Xiaomi, AIA and SMIC among the notable decliners. Investors also remained cautious ahead of Hong Kong’s latest inflation and unemployment data while continuing to assess the outlook for U.S. interest rates and upcoming corporate earnings (Trading Economics, 22 October).
