The ancient civilization of India differs from those of Egypt, Mesopotamia and Greece, in that it's traditions have been preserved without a break, down to the present day.

Until the advent of the archeologists, the peasant of Egypt or Iraq had no knowledge of the culture of their forefathers. On the other hand the earliest of the Europeans to visit India found a culture fully conscious of its own antiquity - a culture that fundamentally remained unchanged for thousands of years. To this day humblest Indian recalls the names of chieftains who lived thousands of years back and the orthodox brahman in his daily worship repeats hymns composed even earlier.

Mayuranathar temple Mayavaram / Tamilnadu :

The town Mayavaram is around 46 KM from Chidambaram .. It is famous for an ancient Lord Shiva temple called Mayuranathar temple ( Lord Shiva in Lingam form ) .. As per records and inscriptions , it is believed that it was built in the period of medieval Cholas in 9th century AD .. that is that this temple is around 1300 years ..The grandeur of the Chola architecture makes it one of the most beautiful shrines in Tamil Nadu...

Added attraction in this temple is KUDHAMBAI SIDDHAR Jeeva Samadhi ..Siddhars are great scholars lived in India .. It is strongly believed by devotees that praying in the Siddhar Sannidhi brings lots of positive energy vibrations to the devotee .. There are around 18 siddhars lived in the ancient times .. Sage AGASTHIYAR is a siddhar too ..

The second attraction is the God SATTAI NATHAR who is a manifestation of Lord Shiva .. This unique form of Lord Shiva darshan can be had in Sirkhazhi which is at 20 KM from Mayavaram... It is opened for devotees darshan on Fridays ..

LEGEND OF SATTAINATHAR :
Mahavishnu incurred a dosham for having sent King Mahabali to Patalam ( story of Vamana Avatara). He wanted to get relieved of this and prayed here. Shiva wanted to show that there is no difference between Him and Vishnu and He took the skin off Vishnu’s body whereby the dosham was removed. He used this skin as an adornment in His body and hence He is called Sattainathar ( sattai in tamil means shirt or dress).

The Legend of Mayuranathaswami Temple:
According to the legend, once Lord Shiva gets angered by Goddess Parvathi. So, he curses her to be born as a peacock... Later she repents for her mistake and asksfor forgiveness. Hence, she prays at Mylapore and Mayiladuthurai to overcome the curse. Pleased by her penance, Lord Shiva is said to have forgiven her...

This temple has a beautiful Nataraja Bronze statue with His Consort Parvathi called Sivagami Ammai in Tamil .. I uploaded here a close up shot of this ancient Lord Nataraja bronze statue .. The craftsmanship is really unbelievable ..

Sheshshayi Vishnu(Reclining Vishnu), Hampi

They say, that every rock at Hampi was once a human or Gandharva or Yaksha. Even today these rocks hold something in them. In one of the last articles, we had seen one of such rocks telling the story of a Sun god. Here is another remarkable art that caught my eye while roaming around these boulders, is of reclining Vishnu. To reach out to this form of Vishnu is not an easy task. But when you reach, you find solace at the feet of Lord Vishnu.

The entire universe is dissolved into primordial waters at the end of the age, Lord Vishnu, having stretched out on Shesha, entered into the Yoga Nidra. Bhudevi and Sridevi are sitting at the feet of the lord, serving him with one hand and holding a bud and bloomed lotus respectively. This indicates that it’s just a little time left for the creation of a new universe. Lord Brahma is sitting on a lotus that has emerged from the navel of Lord Vishnu in penance so that he could form a new universe. And Garuda and Hanumant are standing aside, waiting for their lord to awaken from
Yoga Nidra.
What a remarkable thought behind this beautiful sculpture! I am sure, whenever Tungabhadra is gushing with freshwaters in monsoon, this landscape must be looking like a Kshirsagara itself.

Majestic view from Gangaikonda Cholapuram
.

The Chola Empire was based in the Kaveri River Valley, which runs southeast through Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the southern Deccan Plateau to the Bay of Bengal. At its height, the Chola Empire controlled not only southern India and Sri Lanka, but also Maldives. It took key maritime trading posts from the srivijaya empire in what is now Indonesia, enabling a rich cultural transfusion in both directions, and sent diplomatic and trading missions to China's Song Dynasty (960 - 1279 CE).
