Teach Shame Without Shaming the Child

Alhamdulillah.

Some parents have become so afraid of “shaming” children that they hesitate to call anything shameful. This is an overcorrection. Islam does not seek to raise a child without shame. The Prophet ﷺ said:

«الْحَيَاءُ خَيْرٌ كُلُّهُ»

“Ḥayāʾ is entirely good.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 37.)

Ibn Rajab explains in Jāmiʿ al-ʿUlūm wa-l-Ḥikam that praiseworthy ḥayāʾ urges a person toward what is beautiful and restrains them from what is ugly. What prevents someone from fulfilling the rights of Allah or people is not ḥayāʾ, but weakness and timidity.

Ḥayāʾ is the moral sensitivity awakened by knowing that Allah witnesses us, which moves us to avoid what is unworthy and honor what He has entrusted to us.

In his explanation of Dīn al-Ḥayāʾ (The Religion of Moral Modesty), Ṭāhā ʿAbd al-Raḥmān connects it to الشاهدية الإلهية (divine witnessing) and states:

«فلا حياء إلا من الشاهد، ناهيك عن الشاهد الأعلى».

“There is no ḥayāʾ except before a witness, above all the Supreme Witness.”

A child should know that lying, indecency, cruelty, intoxication, and betrayal are shameful before Allah. But there is a difference between saying, “What you did is shameful,” and making the child believe, “I am shameful and beyond repair.” The first can awaken the conscience; the second may drive wrongdoing underground.

Also ḥayāʾ does not mean remaining silent about abuse or injustice. A modest child must still speak the truth, say no, seek help, and report harm. True ḥayāʾ produces integrity, courage, and a quick return after failure.

MONITOR YOUR CHILDREN.

As-Shaykh Saalih Fawzaan (hafidhahuLLaahu) admonished parents :

"Then you, oh father, monitor your children even outside of the house. "(Always inquire about) Where they go? Who sits with them(who their friends are) etc."Ask (the) teachers and those in charge of his school about the behavior of your child, and likewise his tendencies."Ask them also about his companions (friends). Ask them, follow and pursue him, even if it be outside of the house. Because he (or she) is still under your responsibility (in which you be asked regarding it by Allaah); whether he is in the house or outside of it.

"No doubt this is a huge and heavy responsibility. However, Allaah will aid you, if you are truthful and sincere in your intention.
"Then if the child comes to know and sees your determination and your continuous monitoring of him, then surely he will be cautious and will turn to what he is directed to ( with permission of Allaah)."But if he knows and see that you do not inquire about him nor are you aware of his activities, then he will become wasted (in wrong activities) between the school and the home.

" There are (evil) people who (physically and ideologically) abduct children and circulate amongst them cigarettes, drugs and (other kinds of) intoxicants, and they instill in them evil thoughts and ideologies. This may take place in or outside the school."You are responsible for them, your are the father; follow and stay on top of their activities."Choose an upright school for them, a school that has upright teachers and students in it."Choose for your child an appropriate (school /madrasah) because you be asked (by Allaah) as regards to them. May Allaah aid your efforts and grant you success.

"Do not say: I am busy and he is also preoccupied (with studies). Then you go to your trade (work) and occupy yourself with (how to increase your) wealth, trying to make profit and commit yourself to preserving it. Yet you don't preserve your children."(But) the real gains and profit in your trade/business/occupation, without a doubt, is your children - if you nurture them and direct them in the right way.

"Know that they (your children) are your real business with Allaah, gloried be He; the Exalted."Your children will be the ones who will be making Du'a for you after your death, likewise they will be your successor in regards to your family and wealth."So, if you put them on the right track with correct nurturing and guidance, then they will become the best (bi izn LLAAH) successors to the best predecessors.
"However, if you neglect them, then they will be a source of sorrow and grief for you dead or alive.

"Fear Allaah, oh servants of Allaah, as regards to your children."Carry out your trust which Allaah has tasked you with(as regards your children). If you don't, then surely you will be questioned about it on the Day of Judgment.
"(And) 'All of you are Shepherds and all of you are responsible for your flock'(part of an hadeeth which was reported by Abdullah Ibn Umar collected Imaam Bukhaari) "

Women Are the Makers of Great Men
It is said that Imām Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullāh) was blessed with a mother whose faith, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to Allāh shaped the course of his life.

It is narrated that when he was only ten years old and memorizing the Qur'ān, his mother would wake him long before Fajr. During the bitterly cold nights of Baghdad, she would warm water for his wudūʾ, help him prepare, then wrap herself in her jilbāb and ḥijāb and accompany him to the masjid through the dark streets, simply to ensure that her son grew up attached to the house of Allāh and the pursuit of sacred knowledge.
SubhānAllāh.

History often remembers the scholar, but it does not always remember the mother who quietly helped shape him.

Behind many great men stands a righteous woman who nurtured their hearts before the world ever recognized their names.

She taught them to love the Qur'ān before they loved recognition.
She taught them to stand in prayer before they learned to stand before people.
She taught them that pleasing Allāh is greater than seeking the praise of creation.
Such mothers do not simply raise children—they raise generations.

Their patience, sacrifices, tears, late nights, sincere advice, and countless duʿāʾ become seeds that, by Allāh's permission, grow into scholars, callers to the truth, leaders of righteousness, and servants who benefit the Ummah.

Never underestimate the influence of a righteous mother.

The home is the first school.
The mother is often its first teacher.
And the hearts she nurtures today may become the hearts that revive this Ummah tomorrow, by the permission of Allāh.

May Allāh make our homes places where the Qur'ān is recited, where the Sunnah is lived, and where children are raised upon Tawhīd, taqwā, sincerity, and righteous character.

اللهم أصلح أبناء المسلمين، واجعلهم قرة أعينٍ لوالديهم، وانفع بهم الإسلام والمسلمين، واجعلهم من أهل القرآن والسنة.
O Allāh, rectify the children of the Muslims, make them the comfort of their parents' eyes, benefit Islām and the Muslims through them, and make them among the people of the Qur'ān and the Sunnah. Āmīn.

A SERIOUS MESSAGE TO ALL PARENTS OF CHENAB VALLEY AND EVERY COMMUNITY

📱 MOBILE PHONES ARE A RESPONSIBILITY, NOT A FREE PASS!

Today, every parent must ask themselves some serious questions:

❓ How many fathers and mothers regularly check whether their children are using mobile phones safely and responsibly?

❓ How many parents know who their children are talking to online, what content they are watching, and whether their online friendships are affecting their studies, character, and religious values?

❓ Are we giving our children smartphones for education while forgetting to teach them the responsibilities that come with using them?

Giving a child a smartphone without guidance is like opening a door without teaching them which paths are safe.

👉 1. EDUCATION MUST NOT BECOME AN EXCUSE FOR IRRESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR

Education is essential for every boy and girl. Girls deserve education, opportunities, safety, and respect. But education should also include moral values, self-respect, personal boundaries, and awareness of the difference between healthy friendships and harmful relationships.

Parents must explain that not every online friendship is genuine, not every person has good intentions, and not every private conversation is harmless.

👉 2. PARENTS MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

Dear fathers and mothers, your responsibility does not end when you provide food, clothing, education, and a mobile phone.

Your responsibility also includes:
✅ Knowing how your children use their phones.
✅ Establishing reasonable screen-time limits.
✅ Teaching online privacy and personal safety.
✅ Discussing the consequences of secretive or inappropriate relationships.
✅ Providing Islamic education and moral guidance.
✅ Building trust so children can discuss their problems without fear.

Monitoring should protect children, not humiliate them. Guidance should build character, not create fear.

👉 3. ISLAMIC EDUCATION AND MORAL VALUES ARE ESSENTIAL

For Muslim families, Islamic education should not be limited to teaching prayers and religious rituals. Children must also learn modesty, honesty, self-control, respect, accountability, and the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries in relationships.

Teach your children the meaning of halal and haram with wisdom, patience, and compassion.

Do not wait until a serious problem develops before discussing faith and character with them.

👉 4. THIS RESPONSIBILITY APPLIES TO BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS

We must stop placing the entire burden of family honour and moral responsibility on girls.

Boys also need guidance. They must learn to respect girls, avoid manipulation, maintain appropriate boundaries, and take responsibility for their own actions.

The same moral standards must apply to sons and daughters.

No child should be publicly shamed, threatened, or treated as worthless because of a mistake. Parents must correct mistakes while protecting their children's dignity and safety.

👉 5. SPECIAL CARE IS NEEDED FOR CHILDREN LIVING AWAY FROM THEIR PARENTS

Some students live away from home for education. They may face loneliness, peer pressure, emotional difficulties, and online risks.

Parents and guardians should remain involved in their lives through regular conversations, appropriate supervision, and emotional support.

Do not assume that sending money and paying educational expenses is enough. Children also need guidance, attention, and a sense of belonging.

👉 6. A MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OF CHENAB VALLEY

Let us work together to promote responsible smartphone use, religious education, family communication, and the safety of our young generation.

We should not blame an entire community or accuse young people without evidence. Instead, we must identify real problems, discuss them openly, and take practical steps to address them.

If we want a stronger society, we must begin inside our homes.

👉 A FINAL MESSAGE TO EVERY PARENT

Before handing your child a smartphone, teach them responsibility.

Before sending them away for education, prepare them for independence.
Before blaming them for a mistake, ask yourself whether you gave them enough guidance.

Before demanding good character from your children, demonstrate it through your own behaviour.

📢 Let us protect our children through awareness, not rumours; through guidance, not humiliation; and through responsibility, not neglect.

May Allah guide our families, protect our children, strengthen our moral values, and help us raise a generation that combines knowledge with character. Ameen.

No matter how qualified or wealthy you are, if you fail to raise your children properly, you have failed at one of life's greatest responsibilities. Parenting is an Amanah from Allah, and understanding Islamic teachings is essential.Children don't automatically grow up with good values; they need guidance, discipline, and proper Islamic education.

Never normalize disrespect or bad behavior by saying, “They're just children.” The way you raise them today shapes who they become tomorrow. And if they go astray, you—not your neighbors or society—will bear the consequences.

"According to Psychologists, there are four types of Intelligence:

1) Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
2) Emotional Quotient (EQ)
3) Social Quotient (SQ)
4) Adversity Quotient (AQ)

1. Intelligence Quotient (IQ): this is the measure of your level of comprehension. You need IQ to solve maths, memorize things, and recall lessons.

2. Emotional Quotient (EQ): this is the measure of your ability to maintain peace with others, keep to time, be responsible, be honest, respect boundaries, be humble, genuine and considerate.

3. Social Quotient (SQ): this is the measure of your ability to build a network of friends and maintain it over a long period of time.

People that have higher EQ and SQ tend to go further in life than those with a high IQ but low EQ and SQ. Most schools capitalize on improving IQ levels while EQ and SQ are played down.

A man of high IQ can end up being employed by a man of high EQ and SQ even though he has an average IQ.

Your EQ represents your Character, while your SQ represents your Charisma. Give in to habits that will improve these three Qs, especially your EQ and SQ.

Now there is a 4th one, a new paradigm:

4. The Adversity Quotient (AQ): The measure of your ability to go through a rough patch in life, and come out of it without losing your mind.

When faced with troubles, AQ determines who will give up, who will abandon their family, and who will consider suicide.

Parents please expose your children to other areas of life than just Academics. They should adore manual labour (never use work as a form of punishment), Sports and Arts.

Develop their IQ, as well as their EQ, SQ and AQ. They should become multifaceted human beings able to do things independently of their parents.

Finally, do not prepare the road for your children. Prepare your children for the road."

Question: At what age is a child supposed to be sleeping alone, especially male child?

Answer: At 7, a child shouldn't sleep on the same bed with his parents.

At 10, children (male or female) should sleep on separate beds not necessarily different bedrooms. (Separate bedrooms is preferable if the parents can afford).

Before 15, a male child generally shouldn't be allowed to sleep alone without supervision (Depending on upbringing and circumstances).

At 15, a male child should have his separate room with full privacy. Even his parents should knock before entering upon him. Any bad thing he's doing at this age started years earlier through what was tolerated or neglected.

Walking in Parents’ Footsteps

Children are visual and environmental learners. They actively internalize what receives attention in the home, how parents handle pressure and how they treat others.

The Prophet ﷺ emphasized role-modeling over rigid enforcement. True tarbiyah begins when a child watches their parents make regular prayer, read the Qur’an, practice patience, and offer sincere apologies when they make mistakes.

If parents desire their children to walk a righteous path, they must walk it first. A child will struggle to develop a love for salah (prayer) or adab (etiquette) if they do not see those principles lived out daily by their primary role models.

“A child is a trust (amanah) in the care of his parents, for his pure heart is a precious uncut jewel devoid of any form or carving, which will accept being cut into any shape, and will be disposed according to the guidance it receives from others. If it is habituated to and instructed in goodness then this will be its practice when it grows up, and it will attain to felicity in this world and the next; its parents too, and all its teachers and preceptors…”

~ Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali رحمه الله, Ihya Ulum al-Din

The Prophet ﷺ said,

“The best of what a man leaves behind after his d*ath are three things: a righteous child who prays for him, an ongoing charity whose reward reaches him, and knowledge that is acted upon after him.”

UVAIS AL QARNI (rahimahullah) -

The man the ummah of Rasool al-Allah (sallallaahu alayhiwa sallam) must necessarily know.

Uwais Al Qarni’s story sets an example for all Muslims as to how even without meeting the Prophet (salallaahu alaihiwa-salaam), one may still earn Allah’s favor and pleasure, on account of his unflinching love for the Prophet (salallaahu alaihiwa-salaam). Uwais Al Qarni (rahimahullaah) could never meet the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhiwa sallam) in person.

His name Uwais al-Qarni – Abu ‘Amr – was Uways ibn ‘Aamir ibn Juz’ ibn Maalik al-Qarni al-Muraadi al-Yamaani, one of the foremost Taabi‘een and righteous close friends of Allah. He lived at the time of the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhiwa sallam) and became Muslim, but did not meet him.

What prevented him from travelling to meet him was the fact that he was preoccupied with taking care of his mother, as was narrated by al-Haafiz Abu Nu‘aym in Hilyat al-Awliya’ (2/87) from Asbagh ibn Zayd. He was not one of the Sahaabah; rather he was one of the Taabi‘een.
He was born and grew up in Yemen.

Imam adh-Dhahabi said of him in Siyar A‘laam an-Nubala’ (4/19): He was the exemplary ascetic, leader of the Taabi‘een of his time, one of the pious close friends of Allah and one of His devoted worshippers.

In Sharh Saheeh Muslim, Imam an-Nawawi (rahimahullaah) wrote a chapter on his virtues, in which he quoted what Imam Muslim (rahimahullaah) had narrated of hadiths that speak of his virtues, such as hadith no 2542:

It was narrated that Usayr ibn Jaabir said:
Whenever reinforcements came from Yemen, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab ( RadiAllahuanhuma) would ask them:

Is Uwais ibn ‘Aamir among you? When he found Uwais he said:

Are you Uwais ibn ‘Aamir?

He said: Yes.

He said: Are you from Muraad then from Qaran?

He said: Yes. He said:

Did you have leprosy, then you recovered from it except for a spot the size of a dirham?

He said: Yes.

He said: Do you have a mother?

He said: Yes.

He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alaihiwa sallam) said: “There will come to you Uwais ibn ‘Aamir with the reinforcements from Yemen, from Muraad then from Qaran. He had leprosy but he recovered from it except for a spot the size of a dirham. He has a mother and he honours her. If he were to swear in the name of Allah that something should happen, Allah would cause it to happen. If you can ask him to pray for forgiveness for you then do so.”

Pray for forgiveness for me. And he prayed for forgiveness for him.

Umar said to him: Where are you headed?

He said: Kufa.

He said: Shall I write to the governor for you?

He said: Being among the common folk is dearer to me.

The following year, a man from among their nobles performed Hajj and he met ‘Umar, who asked him about Uways. He said: I left him in a shabby house with meagre provisions.

In al-Mustadrak (3/455), Imam al-Haakim also wrote a chapter about his virtues, and said of him: Uwais was the monk of this ummah. End quote.

Among the greatest of the reports about his virtue are the hadiths that speak of the intercession of a man from among the ummah of Muhammad (salallaahu alaihiwa-salaam) for many people. This is mentioned in many reports, the soundest of which is the marfoo‘ hadith of ‘Abdullah ibn Abi’l-Jad‘a’: “Because of the intercession of a man from my ummah, more people than the tribe of Banu Tameem will surely enter Paradise.” Narrated by at-Tirmidhi (no. 2438). He said: It is hasan saheeh. It was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.

A man from Muraad passed by Uwais al-Qarni and said: How are you this morning?
He said: I am this morning praising Allah.
He said: How is life with you?

He said: How is life with a man who, in the morning, thinks that he will not live until evening and in the evening, he thinks that he will not live until morning.
⚡1
He will either be given glad tidings of Paradise or tidings of Hellfire? O man of Muraad, death and remembrance of death do not leave any moment of joy for the believer; his knowledge of the rights of Allah did not leave him any of his wealth; and his standing up for the truth did not leave him any friends.

Most of the scholars are of the view that he died on the Day of Siffeen in 37 AH, when he fought alongside ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (radiAllahuanhu) and he was martyred there. Al-Haakim narrated that in al-Mustadrak (3/460) with an isnaad going back to Shareek ibn ‘Abdullah, ‘Abd ar-Rahmaan ibn Abi Layla and others. Other scholars stated that he went on campaign to Azerbaijan and was martyred there. See: Hilyat al-Awliya’ (2/83).

Young Children are rewarded for Good Deeds

Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah -rahimullaah- said :
‘Young children are rewarded for what they do from good deeds, even though the pen has been lifted from them in regards to bad deeds.
As is established in Saheeh Muslim that a woman lifted up her child towards the Prophet ﷺ and asked:
ألهذا حج؟
‘Can he perform Hajj?’
The Prophet answered:
نعم، ولكِ أجر
‘Yes, and you (also) get a reward.’
Collected by Muslim in his book.’
Ibn Taymeeyah continues:
‘. . . . so a young child is rewarded for his prayer, fasting, Hajj as well as other good actions. He is given preference due to that, over the one who does not do good deeds like him.’
