Amman, 24 June 2026 - The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded today a visit to London, where he met with Minister for the Middle East Hamish Falconer, National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, UK Ambassador to Yemen, Abda Sharif, as well as other senior UK officials, members of the diplomatic community and experts.
Discussions focused on recent developments in Yemen and the region, and the prospects for advancing an inclusive, internationally-supported Yemeni-led political process under UN auspices as the only viable way to achieve long-term stability in the country, as well as assurances for the region, including maritime security.

On the assassination of journalist Mohammed Aydah in Mukalla, Hadramout, UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg commented:
“I condemn the assassination of Mohammed Aydah and extend my condolences to his family, colleagues, and the wider Yemeni media community. I take note of the investigation opened by Government authorities and welcome continued efforts to establish the facts, ensure accountability, and strengthen public confidence.”
The Special Envoy further stressed: “Journalists must be able to carry out their work without fear. Public figures, including media professionals, civil society, and community actors, must be protected.”
“I condemn the assassination of Mohammed Aydah and extend my condolences to his family, colleagues, and the wider Yemeni media community. Yemen remains in the top five countries in the world impacted by landmines and explosive remnants of war.
In a recent report, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights highlights how anti-personnel mines negatively impact human rights globally, including in #Yemen. The report calls for measures to prevent and address these harms, including refraining from the use and transfer of anti-personnel mines, protecting civilians, and ensuring the rights of survivors and affected individuals and communities.

Over the last 48 hours, the Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has received renewed assurances from the Government of Yemen and Ansar Allah of their commitment to implement in full the May 2026 agreement to release over 1,600 conflict-related detainees.
The Special Envoy urged the parties to intensify their efforts to complete as soon as possible the outstanding technical and operational preparations. Both parties affirmed their commitment to do so.

I am closely following developments related to Yemeni airspace and airports, and I am deeply concerned about the risk of wider escalation.
I am actively engaging with all actors and my Office has contacted military representatives from all sides. We are urging them to de-escalate and refrain from any actions that would risk a new cycle of violence in Yemen.
I call on the parties to engage in dialogue and negotiations under UN auspices to find a way forward that preserves the relative calm Yemen has experienced since 2022 and makes progress toward sustainably ending the conflict.
