Special Envoy Grundberg met today with Lord Tariq Ahmad , Minister of State for the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and United Nations at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Discussions focused on recent UN peace efforts and explored ways to ensure concerted regional and international support to advancing the political process in #Yemen, including through maintaining the unity of the #SecurityCouncil on #Yemen.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, met with the President of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, Presidential Leadership Council Vice President, Aidaros Al Zubidi, Prime Minister, Maeen Abdulmalek, and Speaker of the Parliament, Sultan Albarkani, in #Riyadh yesterday and discussed ways to reach consensus on measures to improve living conditions, a nationwide ceasefire, and an inclusive process under UN-auspices to transition to lasting peace in Yemen.
Also in Riyadh, UN Envoy Grundberg met the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohamed AlJabir, and #SecurityCouncil P5 ambassadors to Yemen to explore ways to ensure concerted regional and international support to UN-led mediation.

التقى المبعوث الأممي هانس غروندبرغ في الرياض أمس برئيس مجلس القيادة الرئاسي اليمني رشاد العليمي، ونائب المجلس عيدروس الزبيدي، ورئيس الوزراء معين عبدالملك، ورئيس مجلس النواب سلطان البركاني، لبحث سبل تحقيق التوافق حول تدابير لتحسين ظروف المعيشة وحول وقف إطلاق نار في جميع أنحاء اليمن وبدء عملية جامعة برعاية الأمم المتحدة للانتقال لسلام مستدام في اليمن.

UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg is in the #Netherlands where he will participate in the Yemen International Forum 2023 tomorrow. Today, he met officials from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and discussed the need for a Yemeni-led long-term vision for peace to inform the role and support of the international community.

يزور المبعوث الأممي الخاص هانس غروندبرغ #هولندا حيث يُشارك غدًا في منتدى اليمن الدولي 2023. واجتمع اليوم مع مسؤولين في وزارة الشؤون الخارجية الهولندية وناقشوا أهمية تطوير رؤية يمنية طويلة المدى للسلام ليسترشد بها المجتمع الدولي في الدعم الذي يقدمه.

Addressing Yemen International Forum on Tuesday, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, noted recent positive developments including continued reduction in levels of violence compared to the time before the 2022 truce agreement, the release of nearly 900 conflict-related detainees, the start of the operation to remove oil from the decaying SAFER oil tanker, and the recent increase in commercial flights between Sana'a and Amman. However, he also noted challenges.
“Economic warfare has intensified. Economic escalatory measures and countermeasures taken by the parties have further damaged Yemen’s already struggling economy, with, as we all know, devastating effects for the Yemeni people. Also, and despite the de facto truce, we have witnessed destabilizing incidents along the front lines, albeit at lower levels than before the truce. And as of late, we have seen an uptick in public rhetoric threatening large-scale escalation, Grundberg said, “These developments serve as a stark reminder of how fragile the recent year’s gains are if there isn’t progress on a political process aimed at achieving a sustainable, inclusive, and just peace.”
He stressed that the road to peace is going to “long and difficult” and “requires a gradual approach as distrust between the parties runs deep.”
“My Office, supported by international partners and regional dialogue efforts involving the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman, continues to engage with all parties to come to an agreement on a sustainable, nationwide ceasefire, a set of economic and confidence building measures to improve the lives of the Yemeni people, and the resumption of a Yemen-led political process,” Grundberg said, “The focus of my mediation efforts remains on starting a political process by providing a platform for Yemeni-owned negotiations and decision-making to reach a comprehensive solution to the conflict.”
Special Envoy Grundberg further emphasized the importance of the full participation of Yemeni women and youth in a political process that provides for Yemenis’ ability to “address underlying root causes of conflict and grievances to break the cycle of violence.”
