Statement by UN Special Envoy for Yemen on Taiz

I am alarmed by developments in Taiz governorate, where fighting has significantly intensified. Ansar Allah’s military operations in the area pose grave risks to the civilian population.

My office has received deeply troubling reports of casualties, damage to infrastructure, and road closures affecting people’s ability to leave the area. Taiz is the third largest city of Yemen and it is the governorate that is currently hosting the majority of the newly displaced Yemenis following the recent fighting in other areas.

Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected. Every effort must be made to prevent further harm and ensure safe and unhindered access to people in need.

I repeat my call on Ansar Allah to halt its military offensive. I remain in close contact with the Government of Yemen and Ansar Allah on steps to urgently contain the situation and ensure freedom of civilian movement.

يجب حماية المدنيين والبنية التحتية المدنية. ويتعين بذل كل جهد للحيلولة دون وقوع المزيد من الأضرار وضمان وصول المساعدات بأمان ودون عوائق إلى المحتاجين.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen concludes visit to Washington D.C.

Amman, 7 October 2026 - The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded yesterday 6 October a visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with senior United States government officials at the State Department, National Security Council and the Pentagon, as well as US and Yemeni experts.

Discussions focused on the latest developments in Yemen, including security implications for the region. Grundberg stressed that regional and international commitment towards a political path is key to comprehensively resolve the Yemeni conflict and bring peace and stability to Yemen and its neighbors.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, delivered his briefing today to the #UNSecurityCouncil.

✍️ Key points included:

⚪ This is a defining moment for Yemen and for the region.

⚪Yemen has slid back into full-scale war, with hostilities spreading across multiple frontlines. Aerial attacks, including airstrikes, have continued across the country as well as cross-border attacks against civilian and energy infrastructure in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Fighting has also intensified in Taiz, Lahj, Marib, Al-Jawf and Hajjah.


⚪While the situation remains highly fluid, one fact is clear: civilians, especially women and children, are once again bearing the brunt of escalating violence.
The humanitarian situation in Taiz is rapidly deteriorating.

⚪ Obligations of international humanitarian law are not optional. They must distinguish between civilians and combatants and between civilian objects and military objectives. Children are entitled to special protection, and their recruitment and use in armed conflict is prohibited.

⚪ Ansar Allah’s threats against Saudi-linked commercial ships in the Red Sea undermine the freedom of navigation of every country.


⚪ Evolving military calculations are affecting how the parties assess the value, timing and terms of potential political engagement.

⚪ A political process is a responsibility the parties owe to the 40 million Yemenis who have endured more than a decade of conflict. The shape and timing of that settlement are for Yemenis to determine.

⚪ Yemen’s conflict cannot be contained. A credible political process that addresses the fundamental causes underpinning the Yemen conflict, will contribute to regional stability. Preserving that path is in the interests of the Yemeni people, every member of this Council and the wider international community.

Statement by UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, on latest attacks against Saudi Arabia

Amman, 11 October 2026 - I strongly condemn the continuing attacks against civilian infrastructure in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by Ansar Allah, including the latest attack on 10 October against King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh which killed 12 people and injured over 300, according to Saudi authorities. This follows attacks earlier this week on Riyadh and Abha airports that also killed and injured civilians.

These attacks represent a grave escalation. Such actions pose a serious threat to regional security, perpetuate cycles of violence and complicate even more peace efforts for Yemen.

I repeat my call on Ansar Allah to cease these attacks. I also reiterate my call for respect of international humanitarian law, including the prohibition on directing attacks against civilians and civilian objects.

Statement by the Secretary-General – on the attack on Riyadh

I am deeply shocked by and strongly condemn Saturday’s lethal attack by the Houthis on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which reportedly killed 12 people and injured hundreds of civilians.

Attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure are a violation of international law. These attacks must cease immediately.
