In his briefing to the #SecurityCouncil today, UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg noted that since the start of the truce, there has been a significant reduction in violence and civilian casualties and no confirmed airstrikes inside Yemen or cross-border attacks emanating from Yemen.

Mr. Grundberg noted that “the truce is still fragile and temporary,” stressing the need to “work collectively and intensively to ensure it does not unravel.” He further noted to the Council that his office has established coordination mechanisms for all aspects of the truce, and encourage the parties to engage seriously and meaningfully in those.

"Truce is broadly holding, but reports of military operations specially around #Marib are concerning and must be addressed urgently through the truce mechanisms,” Mr. Grundberg said. “I remind the parties that this respite should be used to progress toward ending the war, not to escalate it.”

Special Envoy Grundberg informed the Council that a number of ships entered Hodeidah ports, which is having a positive impact on the lives of civilians. “Flights to Sanaa airport need to resume and we are working with partners to make this happen as quickly as possible.”

Mr. Grundberg noted that “reaching an agreement to open roads in #Taiz is a priority,” stressing that the people of Taiz have waited too long for the moment when they can move freely into and out of the city.

Mr. Grundberg pointed out that “the truce is a chance to steer Yemen in a new direction,” emphasizing the need to progress on the political front “to consolidate this path and to prevent a slide back into fighting.” He further noted that Yemenis need to determine and own a negotiated settlement to the conflict through dialogue.

The Special Envoy told the Council that he will work with the parties to build on the truce elements to sustain it, and as part of his multitrack process. He said this process will be informed by the consultations he started with diverse Yemeni groups and briefed on the outcomes of the first round.

Mr. Grundberg concluded his briefing to the Council by noting that “the coming weeks will be a test of the parties’ commitments,” stressing that “this is a time to build trust and confidence, which is not easy after more than seven years of conflict.”
“
Yemen will need the international community’s support as much as ever to maintain the momentum, and move toward finding an inclusive, peaceful and sustainable end to the conflict. And I will need your redoubled efforts and support during this critical period,” he said.
