✨Tired of, with, by, or from?🤔

📚 When ‘tired’ means fatigued either in body or in mind, it is followed by ‘by’ if it is used as a participle (An invalid may be tired by the slightest exertion), and by ‘with’ or ‘from’ if it is adjectival:

❶ I am tired with climbing that steep hill.

❷ Nowadays I seem to get tired from the least exertion.

🔻‘With’ suggests ‘on account of,’
🔻‘from’ suggests ‘as a result of’.
🔻‘Tired out’ usually takes ‘with.’

📚 When ‘tired’ means satiated or the colloquial fed up, it is followed by ‘of’:

❶ I am tired of listening to his complaints.

❷ I am tired of rice pudding; we have had it every day.

⭐️How to Use LIKE in Spoken
English⭐️

📚In informal speaking, you will hear like used very commonly. It has a number of functions:

📕1- Filler

• We can use like to fill in the silence when we need time to think about what to say next or how to rephrase what we have just said:

▶️I want to … like … I think we need to think carefully about it. It’s … like … it’s a very difficult decision for us to make.

📒 2- Focusing attention

• We can use like to bring attention to what we are going to say next. We do this especially when talking about quantities and times:

▶️There were like five hundred guests at the wedding. (like brings focus to the large number of guests)

▶️It wasn’t till like 12:00 that I actually got to start on the project. (like brings focus to how late it was)

📙 3- Asking for an example (Like what?)

• In speaking, we often use like what? to ask for an example:

▶️A: Some really funny things happened on the last day of school.

B: Funny things? Like what?

🔺It can also be used to ask a question, meaning ‘similar to what?’:

▶️[talking about a new restaurant]

A:There was kangaroo steak on the menu. I decided to try it.

B:Really?

A:Yeah. It actually tasted good.

B:Like what?

A:I don’t know. Like steak but softer.

📗 4- Softening what has just been said

• We can use like at the end of what we say to modify or soften what we have just said especially if we are not sure if it was the right thing to say:

▶️[A and B are talking about B’s holiday]

A: So did you buy anything there?

B: No. It was too expensive, like.

I hated the film. It was very violent, like.

📘 5- Reported speech

• It has become common in very informal speaking to use like as a reporting verb. It can be used to report what someone said or what someone thought. It is used especially by young people, and it makes what is reported sound more dramatic:

▶️Jason was like ‘I’m not going to Alma’s party because Chris is going to be there’ and I’m like ‘he’s so afraid of Chris’. (in the first use of like, it means ‘he said’, but in the second use it means ‘I thought’)

📕 6-Saying something is like something else

• We can use the structure it + be + like to introduce an example or say that something is similar to something else:

• It’s like when you go to the airport and you keep thinking that you have forgotten something important.

▶️[a woman talking about her husband Bob]

Everyone is always saying hello to Bob. It’s like being married to a superstar!

📒 7- Be like or what is … like?

• We can use be like to ask for a description of someone or something (e.g. their appearance, their character, their behaviour):

▶️What’s your new apartment like?
👇
Not: How is your new apartment like?

🔺Be like or look like?

• We use be like to talk about someone’s character or personality. We use look like to talk about someone’s appearance:

▶️A: What’s your new boss like?

B: She’s nice. She’s very professional.
👇
Not: She’s like a very professional person.

▶️A: What does your father look like?

B: He’s very like me but taller and older!

📌Compare📌

A: What is Martina’s new boyfriend like?
B: He’s really nice.
(What is his personality like? Is he nice?)

A: What does Martina’s new boyfriend look like?
B: He’s tall, with blond hair.
(What is his appearance like? Is he handsome?)

📚Good (i.e. skilful or proficient) at a subject, a hobby, or an activity: good at mathematics, good at photography, good at making aeroplanes. (In colloquial English sometimes used sarcastically, as good at finding jobs for others, good at looking after his own interests.)

📚Good with (i.e skilful in the use, management or treatment of) something or someone: good with one's hands, good with one's needle, good with children.

📚Any good, no good, not much good to a person or organization, for a use or purpose, at a pursuit or activity, as (i.e in the capacity of) someone or something, with (i.e. in the use, management or treatment of).

• He is quite brilliant intellectually, but he is no good with his hands.

📚For good: for ever.
After we had been in the village a few months we so liked it that we decided to settle there for good.
Sometimes for good and all: e.g. 'When once he has made up his mind it is made up for good and all'.
An influence for good, however, means 'an influence in the direction of, or making for, good'.

📚For the good of: for the benefit or advantage of; e.g. for the good of one's health, for the good of the children, for the good of the cause, for the good of the school.

• I was fifty pence to the good over that deal.

• If we arrive earlier than we expected, all to the good.

⭐️Special case of RECLASSIFICATION⭐️

⏩In order to understand this lesson, we have to read about reclassification.

📚Nouns may be shifted from one class to another by means of conversion. Thus a nonconut noun like cheese can be 'reclassified' as a count noun involving a semantic shift so as to denote quality partition 'kind/ type/form of', eg:⏬

🔻A: What cheeses have you got today?
B: Well, we have Cheddar, Gorgonzola, and Danish Blue.

📚Similarly, a noun like coffee, which is normally nonconut, as in (1), can be reclassified as :

• a count noun to mean an 'appropriate unit of' as in (1a) and (1b), or
• a kind/sort/brand of' as in (1c) and (1d):⏬

🔻(1)Do you want tea or coffee?
🔻(1a)Can I have a coffee, please? ['a cup of coffee']
🔻(1b)Two coffees, please. ['two cups of coffee']
🔻(1c)This is a nice coffee.
🔻(1d)I like Brazilian coffees best.

📚📚THERE IS A SPECIAL CASE OF RECLASSIFICATION IN CASES LIKE THE FOLLOWING:

🔻Are you cosmetics?

HERE THERE IS NO COREFERENCE RELATION BETWEEN SUBJECT AND COMPLEMENT AS IN

🔻Are you a teacher?

THE COMPLEMENT REPRESENTS INSTEAD A COMPRESSED FORM OF THE PREDICTION:

eg: Are you (selling) cosmetics?

IN THIS USE OF THE NOUN THERE IS AN IMPLIED CONTRAST:
'COSMETICS AS OPPOSED TO TOYS, JEWELLERY, ETC IN A DEPARTMENT STORE'.

🔘
SIMILARLY:

🔻Are you 103? ['the occupant of the room number 103, as opposed to 104, etc']

THE CONTRAST MAY ALSO BE MORE EXPLICIT, AS IN:

🔻Are you church or chapel? ['a member of the Church of England or a nonconformist']

IN THESE LAST CASES WE MAY ARGUE THAT THE NOUN HAS BEEN RECLASSIFIED AS AN ADJECTIVE AS IN

🔻They're very Oxbridge.
