Trump Media and Technology Group’s new paid data service launched on Aug. 1, providing faster access to Truth Social posts from President Donald Trump and other top accounts on the platform.
“Truth API,” the new application programming interface, is designed to give firms “a direct, licensed, real-time feed of the platform’s most market-moving Truths,” — interim CEO Kevin McGurn said in a release announcing the launch.

From 2 August 2026, the European Commission's AI Office, together with national authorities, will begin enforcing the AI Act. New transparency rules will start to apply, requiring certain AI systems to tell users when they are interacting with AI and when content has been generated or altered by it.
The Commission published today a first list of more than 180 organisations that have signed the Code of Practice on transparency of AI-generated content that operationalises the rules on transparency of AI-generated content.

Yiannis Levendis, a professor at Northeastern University, has developed a robotic firefighting prototype that uses liquid nitrogen to rapidly extinguish wildfires without harming the environment. The system is designed to reach hazardous fire hotspots that may be difficult or unsafe for firefighters to access, offering an alternative approach to early wildfire suppression.
Levendis observed that liquid nitrogen could rapidly extinguish flames by expanding into gas and reducing the oxygen available for combustion. Unlike conventional wildfire retardants, the cryogenic approach leaves no chemical residue, potentially reducing environmental impacts on soil and nearby water bodies.
To deliver the cryogenic agent, the research team built an all-terrain robotic platform equipped with caterpillar tracks and a spray system. The prototype is being evaluated on controlled fires using vegetation commonly found in wildfire-prone forests in the western U.S.

The Russian government has issued a decree banning crypto mining and participation in mining pools in Moscow, the surrounding Moscow region, and parts of the Kursk region from Aug. 15 until the end of 2032.
The measure finalizes a proposal published by the country’s Energy Ministry in late June, which included an explanatory note that said the affected territories could face electricity shortages if the mining activities were not prohibited year-round.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission cleared quantum computing firm IonQ's $1.8 billion acquisition of chipmaker SkyWater Technology, the largest semiconductor foundry based in the U.S., after the agency's leaders disagreed over whether to impose conditions.
Chairman Andrew Ferguson proposed requiring IonQ to agree to granting fair access to rival quantum computing companies, some of whom have ongoing contracts with SkyWater, among other measures to protect competition as the U.S. adds chip manufacturing capacity.

Major OPEC+ nations have agreed in principle to another token increase in their production quotas for September, a move that would complete the theoretical revival of supplies halted in 2023 and give them scope to add more barrels once the Middle East war ends.
Seven members led by Saudi Arabia and Russia are likely to agree to boost their collective target by a further 188,000 barrels a day next month, two delegates said.

Researchers from China’s national police academy have developed an AI framework that can detect illicit cryptocurrency transactions with nearly 90% overall accuracy, according to a recent study.
In an article published in the peer-reviewed Chinese publication Journal of Intelligence, corresponding author Dr Sun Jingchao wrote that the study “provides a precise, generalisable and interpretable solution for detecting illicit cryptocurrency transactions”.
It also “provides an innovative technological pathway for regulatory authorities to combat illicit cryptocurrency transactions and economic crimes”, Sun, a researcher specialising in criminal investigation and cybersecurity, wrote.

Growing populations and expanding industries are worsening freshwater shortages across Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, increasing demand for sustainable water supplies. Solar desalination uses sunlight to produce freshwater efficiently, but oil contamination in seawater can clog desalination membranes and reduce their performance.
In an effort to overcome this limitation, researchers at Pusan National University developed a multifunctional hydrogel membrane that combines oil separation and solar-driven desalination in a single system. The study was published online on June 1, 2026, and will appear in the October 15, 2026, issue of Desalination.
Testing showed that the membrane removed more than 99.99% of oil from contaminated seawater while maintaining stable performance across different oil droplet sizes and repeated cycles. It represents a broader strategy for designing next-generation water treatment technologies.

“We have to move away from this image of the brain as a machine made of gears, with every gear having an exact purpose that we can attach a label to,” — said Stefano Fusi, PhD, a principal investigator at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute, a member of the Kavli Institute for Brain Science.
“The brain doesn’t work like that. Instead, most neurons can display a huge diversity of responses, and this can help the brain solve a huge number of different tasks.”
Most neurons may be far more versatile than scientists once thought. In a major study published in Nature, researchers analyzed more than 14,000 individual neurons across 43 regions of the mouse cortex and found that most didn't perform one clearly defined job. Instead, they responded to shifting combinations of sensory information, movement, and decision-making.
A neuron that appears devoted to one feature under certain conditions may also encode several other pieces of information. That flexibility could help explain how the brain handles new situations without requiring a separate group of cells for every possible experience.
