⚡️🇺🇸 Trump administration drafting ban on Chinese data center devices

The Trump administration is drafting a ban on U.S. imports of new models of Chinese data center components, as it seeks to protect the infrastructure that undergirds the AI boom.

The FCC is working on the measure to bar imports of new Chinese optical transceivers, which allow data to travel over fiber-optic cables at the speed of light within data centers. The move aims to prevent Chinese firms from stealing data, installing malware or disrupting service at U.S. data centers, which house the chips to train and run AI models.

"Transceivers definitely pose a risk," — said Divyansh Kaushik, an AI policy expert at Washington, D.C., advisory firm Beacon Global Strategies. "As the data center buildout scales up, you want to make sure the data center supply chain is secure from the get-go," he added.

🧑‍⚖️ South Africa’s Treasury and central bank propose draft rules on cross-border crypto transactions

The National Treasury and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) released a draft rulebook that proposes that sending crypto offshore must be conducted through an authorized provider and reported to the central bank’s Financial Surveillance Department (FinSurv).

“The proposed regulatory measures seek to minimize the risk of regulatory arbitrage between regulated entities conducting cross-border activities, and to enhance the ability of the FinSurv to detect, deter and disrupt illicit financial flows,” — Treasury and the Reserve Bank said.

❗️ The framework would not make crypto legal tender, nor do the rules distinguish between different digital assets. The two bodies have invited comments from interested parties with a deadline for submission of Sept. 30.

🛰 EON wants to move the data superhighway from ocean fiber to space lasers

The co-founders of Endeavor Optical Networks — CEO Charlie Horowitz and CTO Tyler Presser — aim to launch a network of laser-equipped spacecraft to link data centers from orbit.

Most satellite communications networks, even those that provide broadband internet service, aren’t robust enough to carry data at 200 terabits a second or more, the speed of undersea fiber. However, more powerful satellites and advances in optical technology are making space-to-ground communications with lasers more feasible.

EON
intends to build a network of about 20 satellites, each able to provide a dedicated link between two continents, with the initial fleet providing 24 hour coverage for early customers. The company will carefully choose ground stations in different regions to serve local data centers and CDNs, using redundant sites and leveraging weather data to ensure a reliable link.

🔥 Dinari launches tokenized S&P 500 stocks for US self-custody wallets using USDC

Tokenized equities firm Dinari is bringing its blockchain-based U.S. stock offering to eligible domestic investors, expanding its tokenization model into the U.S. market after working through the regulatory plumbing needed to let investors buy shares with stablecoins.

❗️Investors can buy and sell 724 tokenized U.S. stocks, including every company in the S&P 500, using Circle's USDC stablecoin through self-custody wallets. Dinari’s stock tokens, dubbed dShares, are available on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base and Avalanche blockchains, with support for Solana and Sei coming “soon.”

The offering runs through Dinari's regulated broker-dealer and transfer agent infrastructure and launches with partners including Circle (CRCL), Stripe-owned Privy, Para and Monaco.

"We're the first platform to let U.S. investors buy and sell tokenized U.S.-listed stocks directly from their own self-custody wallets using USDC," — said Gabriel Otte, CEO and Co-Founder of Dinari.

"For decades, investing and digital assets have existed in separate financial systems. This launch brings them together, allowing investors to move seamlessly between stablecoins and U.S. equities while preserving the protections of traditional capital markets."

⚡️🛰 SpaceX is partnering with Nvidia to design the Starmind AI1 satellite compute payload

Each satellite will carry Nvidia's newest chips, the Rubin GPUs and Vera CPUs. Together they deliver datacenter-class computing power, but in orbit instead of on the ground. The goal is to run AI data centers in space, powered by the sun.

"SpaceX has committed to using Nvidia GPUs exclusively because they are the best. The same Starmind V1 satellite design (minus solar & radiator) will be deployed on the ground in our data centers. It’s a major improvement in data center efficiency," — Musk wrote on X.

🤝 Anthropic Inks $10 Billion Computing Deal With New Cloud Startup

Anthropic has signed a contract to use a data center managed by Nvidia Corp.-backed cloud startup Volta Infra Holdings Ltd. Volta, founded earlier this year, will provide cloud compute to the Claude maker over a six-year period.

Volta has a partner in this deal, Bitdeer, a crypto-mining company that will help develop the data center to provide the compute capacity. That facility will be located in Norway and will deliver a 133 megawatt capacity. It will be fueled by Nvidia’s Vera Rubin systems, the chipmaker’s state-of-the-art AI chip architecture.

🇺🇸 Texas slams on the brakes for 1,800 data centers, power grid requirements are five times higher than peak record demand

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) just announced a moratorium on all data center approvals through the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) until the agencies have completed an audit of data centers seeking approval to connect to Texas’s electric grid.

The governor wants to ensure that data center applicants provide the following: tax break information, power use and generation, water use and cooling operations, community impact reduction measures, and facility ownership. Applicants that haven’t submitted these details will not be allowed to connect to the grid.

“Our top priority is to protect Texans’ safety and quality of life,” — Gov. Abbott said. “Any project that fails to comply with the requirements set forth by the PUCT and ERCOT, and by state law, must be denied connection to the Texas grid. Simply put, Texans must come first.”

⚡️🤖 OpenAI, Anthropic AI agents implicated in new security breaches

An AI agent was caught creating fake online identities to gain unauthorized access to secure systems during tests of models from OpenAI and Anthropic ‌which revealed a series of new breaches, Britain's AI Security Institute disclosed.

❗️The institute said agents powered by Anthropic's Mythos 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6-Sol engaged in unauthorized actions during security evaluations the government organization conducted to assess the models' capabilities.

"Some of the agents being tested had engaged in sustained, potentially harmful activity directed at real people and organisations," — AISI said.

It ran the challenge 122 times, and identified 19 unsanctioned actions across a total of 10 test runs. Anthropic's agent was behind 17 of the actions, and OpenAI's agent the remaining two.
