When emergency lines get backed up, every single second counts. In New Orleans, the local emergency call center handles over one million calls every year while serving 18 million visitors. That is a staggering workload for an agency currently short of call takers.
To lighten the burden on overworked staff, the Orleans Parish Communication District turned to an automated tool called Call Triage. Developed by public safety tech firm Carbyne, the system helps clear clogged lines during major accidents.

A developer posted on the r/ClaudeCode subreddit a major error that their AI tool executed, which resulted in the deletion of their entire drive. According to u/Ecstatic-Big5126, they instructed Opus 5 to back up their system.
While the AI proceeded with the task, it thought that it had created the backup in the wrong directory and then proceeded to run an โrm -rfโ command on the supposed backup. Unfortunately, it mistakenly deleted the entire profile folder in its confusion.
โI asked Claude Opus 5 to create a backup. Instead, it created the backup in the wrong directory and then proceeded to "rm -rf" my entire drive,โ u/Ecstatic-Big5126 wrote. โAfter wiping everything, it just replied: "Sorry, typo." ...like nothing had happened.โ They also added, โThat was simultaneously the funniest and most painful AI moment I've had.โ

An Argonne research team has successfully demonstrated an AI-driven system to automate a powerful simulation method that predicts how atoms in materials interact. Known as atomistic simulations, this method can potentially accelerate discovery of materials for areas such as batteries, aerospace and electronics.
โBy automating these exhaustive investigations, we can potentially reduce the time requirements for discovering new materials from months or years to just days,โ โ said Aditya Koneru, one of the studyโs authors and an Argonne Scholar at the ALCF.

Bitcoin will draw trillions of dollars from institutional investors over the next decade as financial advisers, family offices, pension plans and sovereign wealth funds begin to view it as a mainstream financial asset, according to Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan.
โThe first professional investors to allocate at scale will be financial advisers and family offices. The shift is already visible in 13F filings for spot bitcoin ETFs and in moves by large wealth firms, including Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo, to make bitcoin more accessible to clients,โ โ Hougan said.
Over time, Hougan expects the money to come from even larger pools of capital: foundations, endowments, pension plans, insurance companies, sovereign wealth funds and central banks.
โItโs a process that will take 10+ years,โ โ he said.
The scale matters. Those institutions control between $100 trillion and $200 trillion in assets globally, he said. A 1% allocation to bitcoin would be enough to support his long-term price targets.

Adults may need far more weekly exercise than current guidelines recommend to achieve a major reduction in the risk of heart attack and stroke, according to findings from an observational study published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
The researchers found that substantial cardiovascular protection was associated with 560 to 610 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each week. That amount is roughly 3 to 4 times higher than the current public health recommendation of at least 150 minutes per week. Moderate-to-vigorous activities include brisk walking, running, and cycling.

Researchers from the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) have successfully developed an optimized spark-ignited hydrogen engine suitable for medium-duty commercial vehicles. As a form of internal combustion engine (ICE), the new engine behaves much more like a diesel engine than earlier hydrogen engines.
It is not a new kind of fuel-cell engine, but rather burns hydrogen inside cylinders using spark ignition. Just like a petrol engine, the new ICE produces mechanical propulsion using pistons. In terms of emissions, the engine produces what the team describes as โnear-zero tailpipe COโ.โ
โIn addition to decades of developing medium- and heavy-duty engines, SwRI has some of the most extensive experience in the world developing and testing H2-ICEs for internal research, clients and industry demonstrations,โโ said Dr. Qilong Lu, a program manager in SwRIโs Powertrain Systems Engineering Department.

Using AI as a tool at the start of a learning journey and then combining this knowledge with other trusted sources can be the best way to engage with new and traditional financial guidance tools, said Taha Choukhmane, associate professor at MITโs Sloan School of Management.
โI would encourage people to use AI to explain and define,โ โ Choukhmane said. โIf youโre interested in knowing what the stock market is, what the difference between a mutual fund and an index fund is. Using AI to explain these concepts can be very useful because it can empower people to get the most out of these methods.โ

CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig has stated that the U.S. will prioritize financial innovation over international regulatory consensus, arguing that America should lead the next generation of financial markets rather than adopt rules designed for legacy systems.
The CFTC is exploring how regulated stablecoins could be used as collateral in derivatives markets, a move he said could modernize market infrastructure while maintaining the safety and integrity of trading systems.
Selig stressed that financial regulation must adapt to rapidly changing markets driven by automation, algorithmic trading, AI, and real-time execution.

The concept envisions three astronauts working alongside intelligent machines. China intends to integrate these new systems into its future space station, that they intend to complete in 2035.
As the crew explores the moonโs surface, one astronaut would direct two robot dogs across the landscape, while another collects rock samples and carries out detailed scientific work, according to a blueprint by researchers working on Chinaโs lunar base.

Anthropic is turning Claude Codeโs auto mode on by default Programming with Claude Code will soon require even less human oversight, as Anthropic says itโs making auto mode the default for Pro, Max, and Team accounts, starting on August 14.
"Auto mode is designed to balance usersโ desire not to be interrupted with a system that helps avoid harmful actions: instead of prompts, it routes each tool call through a classifier targeted at blocking actions that are irreversible, destructive, or aimed outside your environment," โ Anthropic wrote.
