The Divine Covenant Betrayed: A Wilāyah and Mahdawī Analysis of Qur’an 3:187
🔸 Qur’anic Verse (Surah Āl ‘Imrān, 3:187):
"And [mention] when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], 'You must make it clear to the people and not conceal it.' But they threw it away behind their backs and exchanged it for a small price. Wretched is that which they purchased."
🔹 Exegetical Reflection:
This verse refers to the divine covenant taken from the People of the Book—especially their scholars and religious authorities—to convey divine truths clearly, including the signs of the Final Prophet (PBUH) and his rightful successors. However, for worldly gain and out of envy or fear, they chose concealment over truth, betraying their sacred trust.
🔸 Narrative Insights (Riwayāt):
1. Imam al-Sādiq (a):
The "Book" mentioned here refers to the Infallible Imam. Whoever turns away from the Imam is included in the condemnation: "But they threw it behind their backs." Denying the Imam leads to misguidance and hell.
📚 Tafsīr Ahl al-Bayt, vol. 2, p. 872 / Bihār al-Anwār, vol. 8, p. 11
2. Imam ‘Alī (a):
He emphasized how after the Prophet's death, polytheists and hypocrites rejected the complete Qur'an—its outward and inward meanings—because it affirmed the names and rights of the Ahl al-Ḥaqq. They said, “We have no need for this Qur’an,” and concealed its truths, especially the Wilāyah of ‘Alī (a).
📚 Bihār, vol. 90, p. 126 / Iḥtijāj, vol. 1
3. Imam al-Riḍā (a):
In refuting the claim that leadership can be selected by people, he stressed that Imāmah is solely appointed by God, with qualities exclusive to the infallible Imam. Disregarding such an Imam is tantamount to discarding the Book of Allah.
📚 Iḥtijāj, vol. 2, p. 436
🔹 Wilāyah Perspective:
This verse highlights one of the gravest religious betrayals in history: the concealment of divine authority (Wilāyah). The People of the Book knowingly hid the truths regarding the Prophet (PBUH) and his successors. A parallel can be drawn within the Islamic Ummah itself, where after the Prophet, some groups denied the explicit designation of Imam ‘Alī (a), violating the divine covenant and casting the truth aside.
🔸 Mahdawī Outlook:
In the End Times, corrupt scholars and hadith fabricators distort or conceal knowledge about Imam al-Mahdī (aj), preventing people from true guidance. The modern form of "they threw it behind their backs" is reflected in the negligence or manipulation of Mahdawī teachings and the distortion of the concept of awaiting (Intiẓār). Imam al-Mahdī (aj) is the living, speaking "Book of God" who must be clarified to the people. Concealing his reality is a betrayal of divine truth.
🟣 Conclusion:
This verse underscores the heavy responsibility to proclaim divine truth and uphold Wilāyah—not to conceal it for worldly interests. Whether it concerns Imam ‘Alī (a) or Imam al-Mahdī (aj), hiding the truth is a direct violation of the divine trust and an act that trades eternal guidance for the fleeting gains of this world.
