🔴 #Academic_Analysis / Trump and the Theology of War: The Foundations of the “Final Battle” Between Good and Evil

✍️ Mostafa Amiri

▪️Trump: “I want to go to heaven. I’ve heard that my situation in the afterlife is not good, and they say I’m in the lowest place.”[1]

Donald Trump made this statement in an interview with Fox News; a statement that, from an analytical perspective, provides a way to understand one of the most important layers of thought within Trump’s inner circle: the political theology of Evangelicalism.

▪️It is clear that someone has been whispering in Trump’s ear that if he wants to go to heaven, the path to it is the one they have laid out for him.

✅ Heaven, in the Evangelical view, is reached through war

▪️Among Trump’s circle of religious advisers, there is a fundamental concept: “holy war to save the world.” In this view, salvation and redemption are achieved not through repentance or prayer, but through participation in the final battle between good and evil.

Heaven is not, for them, a destination attained through faith, but a reward for those who participate in the divine plan to destroy the forces of evil.

▪️That is why, from the perspective of this movement, if Trump wants to enter “heaven” at the end of his life, he must walk the path of this apocalyptic battle. And in their view, the axis of evil consists of Israel’s enemies: Iran and the Shiite Resistance Axis.

✅ Peace Through Strength: The Political Translation of Salvation

▪️Trump’s main foreign-policy slogan — Peace through Strength — appears on the surface to be a realistic, military-oriented policy, but at the theological level, it is a translation of the Evangelical belief in salvation through war.

In Christian Zionist thought, war is a prelude to the final peace; the same peace that can only come with the return of Christ and the destruction of the forces of evil.

▪️Therefore, when Trump speaks of “Peace through Strength,” he unconsciously translates the language of politics into the language of the apocalypse. In other words, he has turned politics into a ritual — a ritual in which war is not a moral failure, but a condition for the salvation of humanity.

✅ Evangelicalism: The Architect of Trump’s Political Theology

▪️Steve Bannon, one of hundreds of Trump’s strategic advisers and a prominent figure in the Evangelical right and theorist of “Christian nationalism” in America, suggests in an interview with The Economist:

“Trump is an instrument of God’s will; even if he is not religious, he is tasked with breaking the rotten world order and paving the way for the emergence of a new order.”[2]

▪️In reality, he injects the teachings of the theology of divine sovereignty into Trump’s politics — a belief that Christians must take control of the world in order to prepare the way for Christ’s return.

▪️Within this framework, Trump’s policies — from moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem to providing unconditional support for Israel — are not merely geopolitical decisions, but significant actions on the path toward fulfilling the apocalyptic promise.

✅ Trump: The New Cyrus?

▪️In the minds of many Evangelicals, Trump resembles Cyrus the Great — a king who was an instrument of God in carrying out His plan for the salvation of the Children of Israel.

▪️According to them, just as Cyrus paved the way for the return of the Jews to the Holy Land, Trump is also tasked with restoring the power of the State of Israel and initiating the fulfillment of biblical prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah.

✅ Religion, Power, and the Danger of Sacred Legitimacy

▪️In reality, what has taken shape around Trump is the sacralization of politics. He is a political leader whom the religious circle around him has elevated to the position of a pre-messianic figure and an intermediary in the divine plan.

This process creates the most dangerous form of political legitimacy: sacred legitimacy for military and violent decisions.
