🇮🇷 Amir Kabir: The Martyr Who Fought Against “British Shiism”

Amir Kabir (Mirza Taqi Khan Farahani) stands as the first martyred statesman who courageously confronted the infiltration of “British Shiism” — a colonial-engineered distortion of true Islam. While some modern pragmatists have attempted to reduce him to a mere technocrat or early capitalist reformer, history tells a different story: Amir Kabir was a defender of pure Shi’a Islam, unyielding in his stand against religious deviation, corruption, and foreign manipulation.

🕊 The Age of Shi’a Revival

In the early 19th century, as Europe celebrated the so-called Enlightenment and the rise of secular liberalism, Iran embarked on a spiritual renaissance. While Western thinkers like Kant and Voltaire sought to separate faith from reason, the Shi’a scholarly tradition in Iran was being renewed by jurists such as Wahid Behbahani, Mirza Qomi, and Mullah Ahmad Naraqi, who laid the philosophical and jurisprudential foundation for Wilayat al-Faqih (Guardianship of the Jurist) — the rightful continuation of the Imam’s authority during occultation.

As the West moved toward secularism, Shi’ism in Iran became a bastion of moral, social, and intellectual strength, guiding the nation through crises of corruption and ignorance.

⚔️ Confronting False Sects and British Intrigue

During this critical period, British influence penetrated the region through pseudo-mystical sects such as Sheikhism, which later gave birth to Babism and Baha’ism — movements encouraged by colonial powers to divide the Muslim world. The so-called “Bab,” Seyyed Ali-Mohammad Shirazi, who had close ties to foreign companies in Bushehr, falsely claimed to be the awaited Mahdi and incited violent uprisings, leading to massacres and civil unrest.

Amir Kabir, serving as Prime Minister under Naser al-Din Shah, recognized the colonial hand behind these heresies. He saw that Babism was not merely a spiritual deviation but a political weapon — an early form of religious engineering aimed at undermining Shi’a unity and paving the way for Western domination.

🛡 The Hero of Faith and Integrity

Unmoved by bribery or political pressure, Amir Kabir faced both the corrupt clergy and foreign diplomats head-on. He fought against superstition — from self-flagellation to fake miracles — and challenged the influence of pro-British clerics, such as Mirza Mohammad-Mehdi, the Friday Imam of Tehran, who regularly collaborated with the British Embassy.

His firmness enraged the British envoy, and unlike the “modernized elites” of later centuries, Amir Kabir refused to bow to foreign powers.

🔥 The Execution of the Bab and the End of a Colonial Plot

In 1850, after the Bab’s violent rebellion and false claims of prophethood, Amir Kabir ordered his execution. He later exiled Baha’ullah (Hussein-Ali Nouri) and executed Qurrat al-Ain, a female leader of the sect who openly defied Islamic law and declared the abrogation of the Qur’an. Historians agree that this decisive move prevented the establishment of a “Babist kingdom” in Iran — a plan heavily favored by British intelligence.

Though his enemies eventually conspired to murder him, Amir Kabir’s martyrdom became the price of safeguarding Shi’a Islam from imperial infiltration.

🌑 Legacy That Lives On

Today, the same “British Shiism” that he fought — cloaked in new forms of sectarian propaganda and colonial soft power — continues to reappear. Yet, the legacy of Amir Kabir endures through the system of Wilayat al-Faqih, the fruit of that 19th-century Shi’a revival that he helped protect.

History repeats its eternal truth:

“For every false Shirazi, there stands a true Shirazi.”
As colonial plots fail, the guardians of pure Islam remain steadfast.
