🕎 The Genizah Treasure | The Sermon of Fadak

🎬 From the Alleyways of Cairo to Cambridge University

A remarkable discovery in a Cairo synagogue has unveiled secrets from the first decades of Islam. Pages that slept in silence for centuries now speak to the world of the oppression of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (SA) and Amir al-Muminin (AS) – and the role of Jewish actors in those events.

🏺 The Cambridge Discovery

In December 2017, Cambridge University revealed a priceless treasure from the Cairo Genizah – storage chambers of the ancient synagogue of Ben Ezra in Old Cairo. Among thousands of Hebrew sacred texts, researchers found something extraordinary: an 18-page medieval document containing a different narrative.

These images were pages preserved from a noble Muslim woman's struggle against the oppressors of her time and the betrayal by Muslims – a legacy with clear connections to today.

📜 The Oldest Version of Sermon of Fadak

What researchers uncovered was groundbreaking:

· The oldest existing version of Lady Zahra's sermon, known as Khutbat al-Fadak
· Written in both Hebrew and Arabic across 16 pages
· Dated to approximately 5th century AH through paleographic analysis
· Contains several Shi'a narrations describing Imam Ali (AS)

🔍 Research Journey

The story begins in 1896 when a Cambridge researcher, with permission from synagogue authorities, transported 193,000 documents to Cambridge. The Taylor-Schechter Research Unit at Cambridge began structured examination of each leaf under historical scrutiny.

Researchers were astonished to find a prominent Shi'a text among the leaves – speaking of two famous Islamic figures: Fatima, daughter of Muhammad, and her husband Ali ibn Abi Talib, both holding special status in Shi'a Islam.

📖 The Published Findings

This remarkable version of Lady Zahra's sermon was first introduced to the public through a paper by two researchers:

· Dr. Muhammad Ahmad
· Dr. Miriam Wagner (Executive Director of the Woolf Institute and fellow at St Edmund's College, Cambridge)

The Arabic portion, using Shi'a expressions like "Fatima alayhas-salam," was likely written by a Shi'a Muslim and used as part of higher education for elite Jewish scholars.

💬 The Historical Context of the Sermon

The Sermon of Fadak reflects Lady Fatima's positions against the ruling system and issues such as:

· Usurpation of caliphate
· Unjust seizure of Fadak
· Rich with deep Islamic concepts about tawhid, nubuwwah, ma'ad
· Emphasis on liberation from division
· Introduction of Ahl al-Bayt's wilayah as a wheel for community unity

❓ The Puzzling Question

Why would Jewish communities preserve a Shi'a Islamic document given the historical ideological distance between Judaism and Islam?

Analysts propose several theories:

1. Literary Value: The eloquent speech of a Muslim woman centuries ago could serve as educational material for Jewish communities
2. Political Intelligence: Preserving the Prophet's daughter's speech helped understand and find footing in Islamic center events
3. Defensive Function: May reflect Jewish concerns about their position in Muslim-majority societies
4. Special Significance: The content criticizing unjust seizure of Fadak would be meaningful to Jews – the original owners of Fadak

🕵️ The Hidden Secret

Futrus Media suggests the secret lies in one particular section where a narration from the Prophet (recorded in Islamic sources) states:

"O Ali, you resemble Jesus son of Mary, for the Jews hated him so much that they continuously slandered him."

This narration within the sermon may have been preserved so Jews would always remember what perspective to maintain toward the Prophet's son-in-law and daughter – potentially supporting Shi'a theories about Jewish participation and role in events after the Prophet's death alongside the hypocrites.
