The Leader of the Islamic Revolution, in a meeting with various segments of the people this morning, spoke about the recent regional developments:

Regarding the ISIS crisis: ISIS is a bomb of insecurity. The goal of ISIS was to create instability in Iraq, Syria, and the region, then reach its main target—the Islamic Republic of Iran—and destabilize it. This was the ultimate goal. This is the meaning of ISIS.

We got involved for two reasons. First, to protect the sanctities, because the enemies of spirituality and faith wanted to destroy these sacred sites. They had already destroyed the Samarra shrine with the help of the Americans, and their plan was to destroy the shrines in Najaf, Karbala, Kadhimayn, and Damascus. ISIS's goal was clear. It is obvious that the devout youth, the true lovers of Ahl al-Bayt, would never tolerate this. They would never allow it. This is one reason.

The second reason was security. Our officials quickly understood that if this insecurity wasn’t stopped, it would spread and affect the entire country. The ISIS crisis was not a minor matter.

Imam Ali (AS) said: "A nation that fights the enemy in its own home becomes humiliated; don’t let them reach your home." Therefore, our forces went. Our distinguished commanders, including our dear martyr Qassem Soleimani and his companions, went. They organized and armed the youth of Iraq and Syria, initially in Iraq, then in Syria. They stood up against ISIS, broke its backbone, and defeated it.

Our military presence in Syria and Iraq did not mean we were replacing the armies of those countries. Our role was advisory. What does that mean? It means we set up important headquarters, formulated strategies and tactics, and, when necessary, entered the battlefield. But most importantly, we mobilized the local youth of those regions. Of course, many of our own youth and Basij volunteers, eager and determined, went as well.
