The so-called “Libya model” refers to what happened to Muammar Gaddafi — first disarmed through diplomacy, then destroyed by military force.
🔍 What happened to Libya after negotiating with the West?
Libya signed the NPT in 1968. But the West later found, through black market sources, that Gaddafi was pursuing ballistic missiles and chemical weapons.
After 9/11 and the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, Gaddafi feared for his regime. On Sept 19, 2003, he declared an end to all WMD programs and sought a relationship with the U.S.
Gaddafi accepted full responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing, handed over a Libyan intel agent to Scotland, and paid $7.2 billion in compensation.
In 2004, he welcomed inspectors to witness the destruction of 3,600 chemical bombs.
He admitted ties to Pakistan’s nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan. That disclosure eventually led to Khan’s assassination plot.
Despite all this cooperation, the U.S. and France backed NATO’s 2011 military intervention. Gaddafi was overthrown and brutally killed.
