🌿 Surah Al-A‘raf (7:141) — A Great Trial and a Greater Deliverance 🌿

“And [remember] when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torment—killing your sons and sparing your women. And in that was a tremendous trial from your Lord.”
(Qur’an 7:141)

Allah calls the Children of Israel to remember a defining period of persecution: systematic killing of their sons, humiliation and enslavement of their women, and relentless forced labor under Pharaoh. Yet within that suffering was both a profound trial and a great divine blessing.

Commentary from Imam al-Hasan al-‘Askari (peace be upon him)

Imam al-Hasan al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) explains that among the severe punishments imposed by Pharaoh was forcing the Children of Israel to construct massive structures. They were chained to prevent escape; mud would cling to their shackles, becoming so heavy that some collapsed and even died under the burden.

Allah then revealed to Prophet Moses (peace be upon him):

Instruct them not to begin any task except by sending blessings upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and his pure household.

When they followed this instruction, the burden of their labor became lighter. Only those who neglected sending blessings experienced the full severity of the hardship.

The Imam further narrates:

• When Pharaoh ordered the killing of newborn boys—after being warned that a child from the Children of Israel would end his rule—some mothers concealed their pregnancies, gave birth in deserts or mountain caves, and recited blessings upon Muhammad and his family ten times over their infants.

• Allah appointed angels to protect those children. Nourishment would miraculously flow for them, and they would grow safely. Thus, the lineage of the Children of Israel was preserved, and the number of survivors exceeded those who were killed.

• As for the women taken into servitude, whenever they feared harm from Egyptian men, they would send blessings upon Muhammad and his family. Through divine grace—whether by distraction, illness, or other means—harm was repelled from them.

The Imam concludes that this deliverance is the very “great blessing” mentioned in the verse.

Reflection

This verse is not merely historical narrative. It establishes enduring theological principles:

1. Oppression is real — but it is never beyond divine knowledge.

2. Trials refine faith — within hardship can be hidden mercy.

3. Remembrance of Allah and invoking blessings upon His chosen servants carries spiritual and transformative power.

4. Deliverance often begins at the spiritual level before it manifests outwardly.

What Pharaoh imposed through chains, Allah eased through remembrance.
What tyranny sought to erase, divine mercy preserved.

No oppression is permanent.
No chain is stronger than the will of God.
