🕵️‍♂️ Debunking Myths: Was the Iran-Contra Affair a Sign of a "US-Iranian Alliance"?

One of the audience members asked a great question: Opponents of the Islamic Republic often cite the Iran-Contra affair to "prove" a secret, ongoing "Judeo-US-Iranian alliance." Is this true?

The short answer is a definitive NO. Here is the historical reality, which shows it was actually a failed back-channel between enemies—not an alliance.

👇 The Core Logical Refutation

If a secret alliance existed in the 1980s, how do we explain the last 40+ years?
• The US actively supported Saddam Hussein during and after Iran-Contra.
• The US designated Iran a "state sponsor of terrorism."
• The US has imposed the most severe sanctions in history on Iran.
• The two nations have been in direct and proxy conflict, culminating in events like the assassination of General Soleimani.

True alliances are built on consistent, long-term policy. A single, covert, and desperate deal—which became a major scandal in the US and was publicly rejected by Tehran—is the opposite of an alliance.

📜 What Actually Happened?

1. The Context: A War of Survival, Not a Desire for Friendship
During the Iran-Iraq War, the US was actively arming Saddam Hussein. Iran was isolated and desperate for basic weapons to defend itself. According to historical records, Iran was forced to buy "aircraft parts and needed weapons like TOW and HAWK missiles" from the international black market. The goal was purely pragmatic: to survive.

2. The Event: A Diplomatic Insult (The McFarlane Trip)
In May 1986, Robert McFarlane (US National Security Advisor) arrived secretly in Tehran with a plane of weapons and—insultingly—a cake shaped like a key, symbolizing a desire to "unlock" relations.
• Iran's Response: Following the explicit guidance of Imam Khomeini, no high-ranking Iranian official met with them. They were kept waiting for four days and were essentially ignored.
• Imam Khomeini's Words: Imam Khomeini called it a sign of American weakness, stating the US President should "mourn" this scandal, proving the Islamic Republic's firm stance against the "Great Satan."

3. The US Reaction: A Constitutional Crisis
If it was an alliance, why did it become the biggest scandal of the Reagan era?
• The operation was a direct violation of US law (selling arms to Iran was illegal; funding the Contras was illegal).
• It led to massive investigations and nearly resulted in the impeachment of President Reagan. It was seen as a national embarrassment, not a diplomatic victory.

✅ Conclusion

To call Iran-Contra an "alliance" is to misunderstand history. It was a brief, clandestine meeting of temporary and conflicting interests:
• Iran needed tools to defend itself against US-backed Iraq.
• The US needed to free its hostages and illegally fund its own war in Nicaragua.

The deal was a failure. It was rejected by Tehran and caused a political earthquake in Washington. The proof is in the present: the hostility continues, proving no such alliance ever existed.
