🧵 A Thread on the Umayyad Dynasty: A Question of Lineage
The Umayyads were one of the most influential families in Islamic history, second only to the Hashimites (the clan of the Prophet Muhammad). Yet, their role is consistently portrayed as adversarial. Why this historic enmity towards the Prophet's family? Research suggests the answer may lie in their origins.
1️⃣ The Prophet's View: A "Cursed Tree"
The Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) view of the Umayyads was profoundly negative. He is reported to have interpreted the "cursed tree" mentioned in the Quran (17:60) as referring to the Umayyads. In a dream, he saw monkeys climbing his pulpit—a vision that weighed heavily on him until his death—and he interpreted these monkeys as the Umayyads ruling after him. This imagery of metamorphosis into apes is notably similar to a punishment inflicted on a group of Sabbath-breaking Jews in the Quran (2:65). This suggests a profound spiritual connection.
2️⃣ A History of Unusual Hostility
The conflict between the two houses was relentless and spanned generations:
· Umayya fought both Hashim and Abd al-Muttalib.
· Harb ibn Umayya fought Abd al-Muttalib.
· Abu Sufyan fought the Prophet (PBUH).
· Mu'awiya fought Imam Ali (AS) and Imam Hasan (AS).
· Yazid killed Imam Hussain (AS).
· Subsequent Umayyad caliphs are recorded to have martyred Imams Ali ibn Hussain (AS), Muhammad al-Baqir (AS), and Ja'far al-Sadiq (AS).
This generational pattern of targeted violence is extraordinary.
3️⃣ Close Ties with Jewish Figures
Historical accounts show Umayyad leaders had notable interactions with Jews:
· Mu'awiya showed leniency when a Jewish man in his court accused the Prophet of treacherously killing the Jewish poet Ka'b ibn al-Ashraf, causing outrage among the Prophet's companions.
· The Umayyad governor of Medina, Aban ibn Uthman, reportedly consulted the Jewish rabbi Ka'b al-Ahbar regarding religious matters.
· There are even accounts of Mu'awiya's ambiguous lineage, with some historians noting his mother's background.
4️⃣ A Parallel to the "Dajjal" System
In Shia eschatology, the final Umayyad figure, Sufyani, will emerge before Imam Mahdi (AJ) to fight the believers. An Imam is reported to have said:
"We and the family of Sufyan are two families who have been enemies for the sake of God... Abu Sufyan fought the Messenger of God, Mu'awiya fought Ali ibn Abi Talib, Yazid fought Hussain ibn Ali, and the Sufyani will fight the Qa'im."
Thus, the Umayyads are seen not just as a historical dynasty, but as representing a continuous current of falsehood and opposition to divine leadership—a current that some researchers argue has deep historical and perhaps genealogical ties to forces inimical to Islam from its very beginning.

🌍 Solar Calendar Events:
✍ The Establishment of the "Palestinian Embassy" at the former site of the "Israeli Embassy" in Tehran, after the victory of the Islamic Revolution (1979 AD / 1357 HS)
On this day, we also remember a powerful symbolic act following the triumph of the Islamic Revolution. In a dramatic shift in Iran's foreign policy, the building that once housed the Israeli mission in Tehran was repurposed and given to the representatives of the Palestinian people. This act signified the new republic's foundational principle: supporting the cause of Palestine and breaking entirely with the previous regime's ties with the Israeli regime.
