🌍 The American Dream, the English Ideology

By the late 1990s, at the height of Iran’s 8th presidential elections, Saeed Hajjarian secretly met with then-President Seyyed Mohammad Khatami. Still suffering from the assassination attempt in 1999, Hajjarian bluntly told Khatami:

⚠️ “Reform is collapsing due to the absence of social power. Since you refuse to lead, the movement is headless and will soon die.”

Hajjarian urged Khatami to become both President and Opposition Leader simultaneously. But Khatami refused, saying he feared the fate of Banisadr:
🗣 “I don’t want to be like Banisadr who claimed he was both president and opposition leader at the same time.”

🔻 Thus, the so-called Reform Project was nothing but a mix of an English ideology and an American dream. Within half a decade, it turned to ashes.

🕵️‍♂️ The “Intellectual Project”

🔹 Western think tanks, especially the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), became obsessed with a group called the Religious Intellectuals, centered around Abdolkarim Soroush and Khatami.

📑 Their reports claimed:

The rise of an intellectual class familiar with Western science and Islamic tradition could dismantle the religious authority of the Islamic Republic and delegitimize any form of religious governance.

📚 Kiyan and Negah-e Now: The Two Rings

The Religious Intellectuals Project was introduced in Iran through Soroush’s series “The Theoretical Contraction and Expansion of Sharia” (1988). He promoted a Protestant-style Islamic Reformation, arguing that no one could claim to understand divine revelation fully, and religion must adapt to modern epistemology rooted in Karl Popper’s secular philosophy.

⚠️ This “modernist theology” turned the Qur’an into a “silent scripture,” where every individual’s interpretation was valid—thus paving the way for religious relativism and even justifications for homosexuality, as defended by Soroush’s student Arash Naraghi.

By the early 1990s, two journals—📰 Negah-e Now (secular intellectuals, influenced by Isaiah Berlin, the Jewish philosopher) and 📰 Kiyan (religious intellectuals, centered on Karl Popper)—emerged as the twin engines of secular human sciences in Iran, both financially supported by government technocrats like Gholamhossein Karbaschi and Mohammad Taghi Banki.

⚔️ Two Parallel Forces

As Kon-kash magazine (Europe, 1990s) described:

“Reforming religion must rely on two parallel forces: religious intellectuals influenced by Western values, and secular intellectuals who secularize politics and society.”

Thus, the “Secret Army of Intellectuals” was born—an elite circle trained in Western thought, backed by foreign intelligence services (CIA, MI6, Mossad), and tasked with ideologically weakening the foundations of the Islamic Republic.
