4️⃣ Jack Parsons was one of the most influential figures in the history of the American space program. He was also a #Marxist who was at one point accused of spying for #Israel, and had a deep fascination with the #occult_sciences.
5️⃣ His interest in the supernatural went far beyond #sorcery and #astrology. In 1939, Parsons and his wife embraced the teachings of the pseudo-Masonic organization Ordo Templi Orientis (OTO) — the primary hub for promoting Aleister Crowley's new religion called #Thelema.
6️⃣ #Aleister_Crowley taught that the main goal of a follower of Thelema is to achieve a higher state of being by embracing the "True Will" — the ultimate purpose beyond selfishness or ego. In pursuing this goal, many aspects of Parsons' life blurred the lines between "academic science" and the "occult sciences." As a Thelemite, he practiced #ritual_magic, including exorcising impure elements with the pentagram, invoking the power of the "Holy Guardian Angel," and daily solar adoration.
