🌟 The saints of God, who were the standard-bearers of great movements, had intimate moments of solitude with their Lord. In those moments of solitude, they received [spiritual strength] and gave it to society. The reason Almighty God addresses the holy existence of the Prophet of Islam (pbuh) with the words: "Stand (in prayer) at night, except for a little... Half of it, or a little less..." (Quran 73:2-3) is that those tremendous daily efforts, those great social missions and divine responsibilities that the Prophet held, require night vigil.

One of the reasons we are deprived of the blessing of rising for Tahajjud and feel so heavy at that time—as if our ears cannot hear the angelic call that awakens the friends of Allah—is that our soul and heart become weighed down by two matters. It is like a bird whose feet are tied with weights; it cannot soar at dawn to meet its Beloved, nor can the spirit ascend in worship to taste the sweetness of prayer.
🔹 The first burden: idle talk, frivolity, and speaking too much.
🔹 The second, even heavier: backbiting.
I have witnessed with my own eyes how backbiting at night deprives a person of the grace of rising for Tahajjud.

💠 Ayatollah Mohammad-Taqi Bahjat (r):
▫ Sayyid Jamal al-Din Golpayegani (r) once told his son:
🔸 “If you do not perform the night prayer (Salat al-Layl), I will disown you!”
▫ His son, deeply upset, asked:
🔸 “Why would you disown me for neglecting a recommended (not obligatory) act?”
▫ He replied:
🔸 “I mean that you should avoid abandoning the night prayer as much as you can.”
🔸 In fact, by warning his son so seriously, he was securing his son’s future — for every other form of inheritance, whether wealth, land, or livestock, is bound to perish.

📍 Some nights in the desert—which has bitterly cold nights—we were together. One night, the temperature inside the tent was -20°C. Even though a rest stop could be found about 100 kilometers away, he said, "We must set up the tent here and spend the night right here."
He used to say, "If tomorrow we are to bring the youth of the people, we must first experience these conditions ourselves and then prepare suitable facilities for them."
You wouldn't believe it; our breath would turn into icicles on the tent ceiling, which would then fall onto our faces, but this Martyr never uttered a single complaint.
In these conditions, a few hours before the morning call to prayer (Adhan), he would perform ablution (Wudu) outside the tent and proceed with his Night Prayers (Salat al-Layl). After the dawn Adhan, he would lead the congregational prayer and a collective Ziyarat Ashura, followed by group exercises. This was his daily routine.
📌 Narrated by a friend of the Martyr

🌺 Allamah Tabatabai was a student of sincerity, monotheism, and the Night Prayer!
The late Allamah Tabataba'i benefited from that "inherited knowledge" ('Ilm al-Wirathah) more than he did from books and texts.
His teachers in Tabriz, Tehran, and Najaf were known. Some of the Maraji' (sources of emulation) in Najaf who were his contemporaries told us several times:
"What Allamah Tabataba'i possesses is his own; for we know his teachers, and they were never of this greatness, majesty, and splendor!"
The late Allamah possessed this characteristic: "Whoever devotes himself to Allah for forty mornings..." or the hadith: "Whoever is sincere to Allah for forty mornings, Allah will cause springs of wisdom to flow from his heart to his tongue." He was a student of his own sincerity, his own Night Prayers, and his own monotheism.

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is to God, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Master Muhammad and his pure progeny. May God's curse be upon all their enemies.
Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: "People are of three types when they wake up in the morning and rise from their beds."
1. The one for whom it is beneficial and not harmful (لَهُ وَلَا عَلَیْهِ). This is the one who rises from sleep, performs ablution (وضوء), and engages in the remembrance and prayer of God Almighty. From the continuation of the hadith, it is understood this refers not to the obligatory Fajr prayer, but to the recommended Nafilah of Fajr or, more likely, the Night Prayer (Tahajjud). Waking up for this is for his benefit and not to his detriment.
2. The one for whom it is harmful and not beneficial (عَلَیْهِ وَلَا لَهُ). This is the one who persists in disobedience to God, even in his sleep and bed—through sins of the heart and limbs—until he rises. His waking is to his detriment because he awakens only to continue in sin.
3. The one for whom it is neither beneficial nor harmful (لَا لَهُ وَلَا عَلَیْهِ). This is the one who remains asleep until morning. He then wakes up, performs his obligatory Fajr prayer—which is his duty—but gains no additional spiritual benefit from his awakening.
---
An Illuminating Story:
It is narrated that the late Allamah Tabatabai (may God have mercy on him), when he first arrived in Najaf and met the great mystic Ayatollah al-Qadhi, was told by him in the street:
"My son, if you want this world, perform the Night Prayer. If you want the Hereafter, perform the Night Prayer."
For people like us, busy and preoccupied during the day with life's problems and struggles, it is difficult to find a moment for sincere supplication and heartfelt connection. The exclusive solution is for a person to wake up in the last part of the night (Sahar). This specific time is mentioned for its unique spiritual receptivity.
There is truly no alternative. Our only remedy is the Night Prayer.

💫 Love & Affection in Marriage Through Night Prayer (Tahajjud)
A profound story from Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) beautifully illustrates the spiritual connection between a husband and wife, and the transformative power of the Night Prayer (Qiyam al-Layl).
👰♀️ The Wife's Plea
A woman once came to Imam al-Sadiq (AS) and said: "O son of the Prophet! My husband does not love me. What should I do?"
The Imam's advice was concise and powerful: "Upon you is the Night Prayer." (i.e., Go and perform Tahajjud).
❤️ The Miraculous Result
After some time, the woman returned to the Imam, grateful, and said: "Since then, my husband loves no one as much as he loves me."
Upon hearing this, Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said: "May Allah have mercy on a woman who rises at dawn and wakes her husband (for prayer), and similarly, on a man who rises and wakes his wife so they may pray the Night Prayer together."
---
📖 Reflection
This beautiful narration highlights several key points:
1. Spiritual Remedy: The solution to a worldly problem (lack of affection) was found in a spiritual act (Tahajjud), showing how strengthening our connection with Allah ﷻ can mend and bless our earthly relationships.
2. Shared Spiritual Journey: The highest blessing is when a married couple becomes partners in worship, encouraging and waking each other for the most beloved voluntary act—the prayer in the depths of the night. This shared devotion creates a unique bond of love, mercy, and divine light in the home.
3. The Unseen Link: Acts of worship, especially the intimate Night Prayer, bring a special grace (Barakah) and purification that can soften hearts, remove barriers, and cultivate deep, sincere love where it was lacking.
May Allah ﷻ grant all believing couples the Tawfiq to become helpers for one another in righteousness and piety, and to meet in the blessed moments of the night in His remembrance.

🌺 Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen Naseri
It is very natural for a person to want to rest at night. But rest has a limit. There must come a point where you rise against your carnal desires. The earlier and more consistently you do this—while also managing your sleep wisely—the greater the spiritual benefit.
This act of rising in the last third of the night for prayer and supplication is a profound victory over the self and a direct connection to divine mercy.

📍 Many Qur’anic verses call us to awaken. They remind us again and again of this truth. We have also heard stories about it. May God have mercy on the late Ayatollah Qadhi. In Najaf, he once told Allama Tabatabai:
“If you seek this world — pray the night prayer. If you seek the Hereafter — pray the night prayer.”
(Mehr-e Taban, Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Tehrani, p.16)
📍 It is the pre-dawn awakening and intimate solitude that bring life to the soul. These are what return a person to their true self. They prepare the heart for movement — for long bowings and prostrations in prayer.
📍 In ruku‘ (bowing), one says:
“Subhana Rabbiyal-‘Azim wa bihamdih.”
Repeating the remembrance in ruku‘ has immense effect. Everything is found in prayer.
In sujud (prostration), likewise:
“Subhana Rabbiyal-A‘la wa bihamdih.”
Its repetition transforms the heart.
📍 We have not truly set out on this path, which is why we search for shortcuts from the very beginning. But even if we seek a shortcut, the Qur’an shows us the way: prayer, repetition of the remembrance in bowing, as much remembrance in prostration as one can, rising before dawn, intimacy with the Qur’an, and turning toward the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them). All of these are necessary.
