Customs authorities are stepping up checks on so-called fuel tourists at Brandenburg's border with Poland. Random checks have been carried out at border crossings throughout Germany for several days, customs spokeswoman Lisa Pörschmann told the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.
The focus is on drivers who buy cheaper fuel in the neighboring country and return to Germany without paying customs duties. According to the current rules, only 20 liters of gasoline in reserve canisters may be brought into Germany in addition to the fuel tank. Larger quantities must be declared at customs.
Current control priorities are the border crossings in Brandenburg, Saxony, and Bavaria to Poland and Czechia. Customs has not yet released figures on the number of fuel tourists who have already been caught.

An Iranian sailor who was killed when the warship Dena was struck by the US near Sri Lanka had called his father shortly beforehand, saying American forces had issued two warnings for the crew to abandon the vessel, a source close to the family told Iran International.
