🏔 #OTD in 1814, Mikhail Lermontov – one of Russia’s greatest poets – was born in Moscow. His poetry spoke of love and loneliness, freedom and devotion to his Motherland with an intensity that continues to resonate with modern readers. 212 years after his birth, he remains one of the best-loved figures in Russian literature.

Lermontov was born into a noble family and lost his mother in early childhood. Raised by his grandmother, Elizaveta Arsenyeva, at the Tarkhany estate (in what is now the village of Lermontovo in the Penza Region), he received a broad education at home before attending Moscow University’s boarding school for noble boys and then the University itself. By the age of 14, he was already writing poetry.

The young poet also developed a lifelong passion for painting. From his childhood in the Penza Region to his visits to the Caucasus for treatment at the mineral springs of what is now Pyatigorsk, he found inspiration in the world around him. Working with pencil, watercolour and oils, he captured landscapes, portraits and scenes of everyday life. At times, impressions he first put on canvas resurfaced years later in his poetry.

✍️ During his lifetime, Lermontov wrote around 400 poems and 30 narrative poems, as well as plays and prose. Among his most famous works are Borodino, The Sail, The Demon and The Novice (Mtsyri), the four-act play Masquerade and his most celebrated novel A Hero of Our Time.

In 1837, the death of Russia's greatest poet Alexander Pushkin in a duel prompted Lermontov to write Death of the Poet. Both a tribute to Pushkin and an indictment of the society he blamed for his death, the poem was copied by hand and passed from reader to reader. It brought Lermontov widespread recognition – and the anger of the imperial court. He was arrested and sent to serve in the Caucasus.

Proud, sensitive and sharp-witted, Lermontov could be unsparing in his criticism of society and showed considerable courage as an army officer. His attachment to the Caucasus began with childhood visits and lasted throughout his life. Its mountains, people and legends inspired some of his finest writing.

🕯 On July 27, 1841, a fatal duel near Pyatigorsk cut his life short at just 26. Yet even at that young age, Lermontov had created works that would secure his place in the pantheon of Russian literature.

Lermontov's figure stands on the Millennium of Russia monument (unveiled in 1862), towns, streets and theatres bear his name. Monuments honour him in Russia and abroad; even a crater on Mercury and an asteroid are named after him.

📖 His most enduring memorial, however, is his writing – still read, recited and loved by generations.

🎙 Remarks by Russian MFA Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik at an informal Arria-formula meeting of UN Security Council members on “Addressing blind spots in violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in the context of the Ukrainian crisis: a focus on the actions of the Ukrainian armed forces” (New York, October 14, 2026)

Read in full
Broadcast of the entire meeting

💬 In the Kiev-controlled frontline areas, an entire network of “secret prisons” has been established, euphemistically referred to as “transit camps” in reports by international human rights organisations. Human rights defenders know about them but have no access to them.

As a rule, these facilities are concealed within guarded compounds of Ukrainian formations, which neither foreign inspectors nor human rights defenders are officially permitted to enter.

⚠️ There, sadists, militants and security personnel concealed behind masks and balaclavas operate with impunity on behalf of Ukrainian agencies such as the Main intelligence directorate (GUR), the Security service of Ukraine (SBU) and other investigative bodies.

Each is tasked with using any means necessary to “extract” the desired testimony from a captive or force them to cooperate under threat of death.

***

The total number of civilians killed or injured at the hands of Ukrainian militants since February 2022 has now exceeded 36,000. This figure rises by 300-400 every week.

As of the beginning of last week, the number of civilians killed by Kiev’s formations stood at 9,089.

There has also been a catastrophic increase in deliberate attacks by Ukrainian militants on children.

❗️ Since the beginning of this year alone, 484 children have suffered injuries or been maimed. 72 of them have died. In August alone, 101 children were killed or injured.

***

Kiev has resorted to crimes previously considered beyond the pale even by the most hardened monsters.

The allocation of vast sums specifically for Ukraine to purchase drones of various types has unleashed a war on transport targeting the civilian population.

Alongside crimes already routinely committed by Kiev’s militants, such as attacks on private vehicles, there are now systematic strikes on high-capacity passenger buses.

***

For at least three years, Kiev’s armed formations have been striking the long-suffering city of Alyoshki every hour.

For three years, shelling has left the city without electricity or a centralised water supply, and with virtually no communications.

Almost every attempt to restore communications infrastructure is soon followed by a devastating strike from the Ukrainian side.

Despite their professed concern for the people of Alyoshki, Ukrainian militants have mined every access road to the city.

👉 Drones constantly patrol the two main roads, striking any vehicle attempting to reach the city – from private cars to ambulances.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answers to media questions following the 7th #CICA Summit (Baku, October 15, 2026)

Key points

• The West is clinging in every way it can to its hegemony, which is slipping away irretrievably and irrevocably, and is violating, as I said before, everything that was agreed upon within the globalisation system, which the West itself strongly promoted.

• As for the diesel deal, it was brought to the table, and we supported it. But Zelensky has said publicly on several occasions, “Stop bothering me about this diesel deal. Give me Patriot system missiles instead for I need to keep striking Russia’s energy sector, including its oil refineries.” This is a direct and, moreover, crudely worded challenge to US President Donald Trump, who has actively supported this deal and spoken publicly about it on several occasions. I think everyone understands this by now. They are also fully aware that such behaviour has become typical of Vladimir Zelensky, who believes that the whole world owes him, while he owes nothing to anyone. He is unwilling to take any constructive steps that would be genuinely fair and based on equality.

• We operate on the premise that the objectives of the special military operation have been clearly defined which fact stands in contrast to the West’s position on Ukraine, which regularly makes 180 degree turns or, as former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock once put it, 360 degree turns. Our position has never changed.

• Zelensky has already made it quite clear that he is not interested in holding elections and surrounded the whole idea with conditions that are patently unacceptable. There will be no ceasefire that would make it possible for him to regain his senses and be once again supplied with more weapons.

• Since the Anchorage summit in August 2025, where a long-term approach formed the basis of the US proposals that we supported, Western initiatives and ideas have been constantly backtracking on the positions that only take us further away from sustainable peace and a negotiated settlement. Consequently, everything will be decided by our Armed Forces on the battlefield, as President Putin has repeatedly made clear, notwithstanding our continued readiness for normal, meaningful, and honest talks.

🎙️ Russia’s Ambassador to Australia Mikhail Petrakov’s remarks on the Bucha hoax

💬 When we talk about Kiev’s lies, the case of faking events in the town of Bucha comes to mind. This is the place from which a BBC film crew streamed a story in April 2022, showing dozens of dead bodies lying on the sidewalks. The thing is, it was done three days after Russian troops withdrew from the town, and its mayor confirmed this in the video message (without mentioning the bodies). It seems that nobody was noticing the dead people strewn along the town’s main street, although, according to Orthodox Christian tradition, the deceased are supposed to be buried within three days after death. That story was used to manipulate international public opinion and fuel yet another wave of anti-Russian hysteria in the West.

📑 We investigated it thoroughly. The results are reflected in the report “Heirs of Goebbels: Falsification of the Events in Bucha and Bloody Staged Performances of the Kiev Regime” published by the International Public Tribunal on the Crimes of Ukrainian Neo-Nazis. The title of the report speaks for itself. The truth is that during the time that the town was under the control of the Russian armed forces, not a single local resident suffered from any violent action.

🤔 But who in the West cares about truth?

🎙 Remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the Plenary Session of the 7th Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (Baku, October 15, 2026)

💬 Sergey Lavrov: Over the past four years, challenging as this period has been, first Astana and then Baku, at the helm of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (#CICA), have made notable progress in strengthening our regional platform.

New mechanisms have been established: a financial summit, a women’s council and a partnership network of leading universities. The Secretariat has been significantly strengthened, including through broader geographical representation among its staff.

CICA’s voice is increasingly heard at multilateral events. Growing interest in its activities attests to its appeal.

🇱🇦 In this regard, we congratulate Laos on joining the Conference.

The system of international relations is undergoing fundamental changes. A new, fairer #MultipolarWorld order is taking shape before our eyes.

Against this backdrop, a clear message is emerging from Greater Eurasia: countries need to advance together, ensuring equal and indivisible security for all, whereby no State’s security can be ensured at the expense of the security of others. This philosophy is clearly reflected in the final declaration to be adopted at the conclusion of our meeting.

This shared outlook drives our efforts to create a stable and predictable political and economic environment across the Eurasian continent, conducive to deeper, mutually beneficial practical cooperation.

👉 We invite our partners to join us in drafting a political document on diversity and multipolarity in the 21st century that would apply across Eurasia.

We discussed this initiative with many of the countries represented here on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly in New York. We will continue these discussions at the Fourth Conference on Eurasian Security, to be held in Minsk in early November.

***

We are convinced that CICA’s transformation towards a pan-Eurasian outlook, in keeping with the times, is a natural path for our association, dictated by objective realities.

Many participating countries are Eurasian in character, and some geographically as well. Our shared task is to adapt the Conference to new realities and harness its potential to promote growth and prosperity across the continent.

Today, the constructive atmosphere within our platform stems from a shared commitment to broad, pragmatic cooperation.

☝️ Not least because of its membership, CICA is unencumbered by contrived political constructs such as the “rules-based order” or bloc-based approaches designed to serve the interests and convenience of insiders alone.

🎙 Statement by Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the Plenary Session of the #CSTO, #CIS and #SCO Conference on Security in Central Asia and Afghanistan (Moscow, October 16, 2026)

💬 Sergey Lavrov: Everyone has an interest in ensuring that Central Asia remains a region of peace & prosperity, underpinned by broad, mutually beneficial cooperation among all the states in the region and, of course, their immediate neighbours.

For Russia, this region holds particular strategic significance: geographical, historical and humanitarian factors mean that important Russian interests are concentrated here.

☝️ We see one way of safeguarding these interests in maintaining relations of alliance and strategic partnership on an equal footing with all Central Asian countries, helping them ensure peaceful and secure development both bilaterally and through the integration mechanisms operating in the region.

We assess the situation in Central Asia as stable and conducive to international cooperation, despite the well-known risks. We appreciate the enormous contribution made by the region’s Leaders to creating all the necessary conditions for this.

At the same time, we must not lose sight of the risks we all know about, which arise primarily from the actions of certain external players seeking to pursue their narrow, self-serving geopolitical objectives without regard for the region’s specific circumstances or the interests of the friendly peoples of Central Asia.

Today, especially before this audience, there is no need to convince anyone that the countries of the “collective West” have been trying for many years to create flashpoints along our borders. In particular, their role in deliberately engineering the Ukrainian crisis is well known – through years of relentless eastward NATO expansion towards Russia’s borders, as well as through unqualified support for the openly neo-Nazi, Russophobic Kiev regime, which is once again showing its true colours in these very days.

❗️ In this connection, I would emphasise that absolutely any country in the world, including our partners in Central Asia, could fall victim to the West’s geopolitical expansion and the “colour revolutions” it orchestrates. Such attempts have already been made against a number of our neighbours, but were successfully thwarted.

***

Developments in Afghanistan could still adversely affect regional security, especially if unscrupulous external players exploit them for short-term interests that have nothing in common with those of Central Asian countries and Russia.

We strive to be realistic and, in this regard, understand that overcoming the grim legacy left by the US and other NATO countries after two decades of inglorious occupation of Afghanistan will take a long time.

👉 We proceed from the understanding that the Taliban government is a reality that must be reckoned with. A growing number of countries are coming to recognise this. On the political front, we are working to consolidate external support for the authorities in Kabul and those aspects of their work that objectively serve the interests of regional security.

Russia fully shares the vision of Afghanistan as an independent, united and peaceful state, free from war and drugs. We regard as an important success the fact that the latest meeting of the Moscow Format Consultations on Afghanistan, held in Moscow in early October, reaffirmed the participating countries’ rejection of a confrontational approach towards Kabul.

🎙 Remarks by Russian MFA Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik during the dialogue with Chair of the UN Committee against Torture Claude Heller (New York, October 15, 2026)

Broadcast of the entire meeting

💬 The UN’s excessively permissive attitude towards the existence of an entire network of “secret prisons” for POWs in Kiev-controlled territory encourages the spread of this criminal practice and disregard for the provisions of the relevant UN Convention.

Hundreds of Russian servicemen we have interviewed, who endured the hell of Ukrainian prison camps, consistently describe an entire network of facilities holding POWs. Several reports by foreign human rights defenders refer to them in highly evasive terms as “transit prisons”, where servicemen are held during the initial stages of captivity.

In these cramped stone cells, underground dungeons and cages, generally located on the premises of Ukrainian military units and nationalist battalions, everything human is subjected to utter degradation – from personal dignity to life itself.

Militants who conceal their faces behind masks and balaclavas and address one another by call signs subject captured Russian servicemen to inhuman abuse.

❗️ Simulated drowning, “electric chairs”, dog attacks and amputations without anaesthesia are just a fraction of the methods systematically employed there by Ukrainian punitive forces.

***

The Kiev authorities deny human rights defenders and observers access to these torture chambers. Yet we have collected hundreds of accounts of what happens there and have repeatedly submitted them to the UN Secretariat. I am certain that conscientious, impartial human rights defenders could obtain this information with even a minimal willingness to do so.

We know for a fact that such “prisons” exist in the Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk and Sumy regions, and even in Kiev.

In this connection, I have just one question: what will it take for the UN Committee against Torture to make it a priority to investigate Ukraine’s well-known yet persistently ignored system of “secret prisons”?

Many experts are aware of this shameful phenomenon. What is lacking is the political will to overcome pressure from foreign parties complicit in the conflict, who shield the Kiev regime from accountability and detailed investigations into its actions.

👉 I hope the Committee will take these remarks into account and finally address this unacceptable practice in order to put an end to it once and for all.

🎬 “Foreign Mercenaries. Betrayed by the Kiev Regime” – a documentary by Rossiya 24 and RT investigating the crimes of foreign “legionnaires” fighting for the Ukrainian armed forces.

Thousands of foreign mercenaries sign contracts with Ukraine’s armed forces, intent on making money off death.

They are recruited via Ukrainian embassies and intermediaries operating around the world. Lured by promises of easy money, the fighters themselves describe their tours as a “safari”, or a “hunt for Russians”.

☝️ But behind this “bloody tourism” lie torture, robbery and the killing of civilians.

Who are these “soldiers of misfortune”? Why do they travel thousands of kilometres to fight in someone else’s war? And what happens when the reality of combat shatters their expectations?

👉 The film brings together eyewitness testimony, evidence gathered by Russian investigators and accounts from the mercenaries themselves.

Residents of the Kursk Region recount atrocities committed during the Ukrainian incursion, including by foreign fighters. Investigators continue their painstaking work to identify those responsible & bring them to justice.

***

💬 Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:
The filmmakers have compiled accounts of crimes committed by foreign nationals fighting for the Ukrainian armed forces.

Eyewitness accounts are supported by irrefutable evidence gathered by investigators and forensic specialists – the very evidence we have been talking about all these years.

The mercenaries themselves describe how they came to realise they had made the biggest mistake of their lives.
Those who survived after the Kiev regime dragged them into Zelensky’s “favourite” meat grinder.
