🎙 Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova's statement on Latvia’s presidency of the UN Security Council (November 3, 2026)

💬 On November 1, Latvia assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for one month, in accordance with the rotation principle.

In this capacity, Riga is obliged to pursue a balanced and constructive approach, work to overcome differences and heed the views of all Council members, prioritising strict compliance with the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety and interrelationship.

☝️ Russia will closely monitor Latvia’s fulfilment of its obligations as President of the UN Security Council.

At the same time, we harbour no illusions about Riga’s intention to follow the impartial approaches outlined above.

Its representatives’ initial statements on the country’s priorities during its term at the helm of the UN Security Council, including keeping the crisis surrounding Ukraine in the spotlight, clearly demonstrate Latvia’s desire to make the UN Security Council serve its own selfish interests.

We regard attempts to artificially keep the Ukraine issue on the UN Security Council’s agenda and use the Council to spread anti-Russian insinuations as destructive.

We recall that Latvia is among the states that directly sponsor the Kiev regime and thus bear direct responsibility for prolonging the conflict.

❗️ As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia intends to firmly counter any attacks on our country and ensure that the Council acts in strict accordance with its mandate, guided by the interests of truly strengthening international peace and security.

⚡️ On October 30, the UN Security Council failed to extend the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (#MINURSO).

❌ The Russian delegation was compelled to vote against the relevant draft resolution prepared by the US.

China, Pakistan and Somalia abstained.

Apparently, the authors assumed that we would not block the extension of a UN operation headed by a Russian national and included provisions unacceptable to us and several other UN Security Council members.

These provisions sought to enshrine a single option for resolving the Western Sahara issue, denying the people of Western Sahara the right to choose their own future and that of the land they have inhabited since the end of Spanish colonial rule in North Africa.

👉 Such an outcome would run counter to the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, including the principle of self-determination.

The Russian Federation does not support solutions imposed from outside through ultimatums. Any plans for a Western Sahara settlement must be developed through negotiations aimed at reaching mutually acceptable agreements, based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

We are disappointed that US diplomats failed to distinguish between their own national position recognising Western Sahara as part of Morocco and their role as the informal lead on the Western Sahara file in the UN Security Council, which requires them to act as an “honest broker”.

Recognising the importance of MINURSO’s work, we submitted an alternative short draft resolution to the Security Council that would have extended the Mission’s mandate for one year without any changes, including to the parameters of the Western Sahara settlement. Unfortunately, only China and Somalia supported our draft. The US voted against it, while the remaining members abstained.

☝️ As a result, our proposal was not adopted.

We believe that full responsibility for winding down the UN presence in Western Sahara, which has long had a stabilising effect on the situation in the region, lies with the US and the countries that sided with it.
🇷🇺 Today #Russia and all its many peoples celebrate national #UnityDay!

This day symbolizes the unity of our multiethnic nation, celebrates true diversity, honours the unerring ultimate devotion to the Motherland.

❗️ Happy #UnityDay!

🇷🇺 November 4 – Russia's National #UnityDay and a Day of Russia’s Military Glory

#OTD Russia commemorates the liberation of Moscow from Polish-Lithuanian forces in 1612 – a turning point in overcoming the Time of Troubles, one of the darkest chapters in the country’s history.

At the heart of this struggle for the future of the entire nation was the Second People’s Militia, raised in Nizhny Novgorod under the leadership of Kuzma Minin and commanded by Prince Dmitry Pozharsky.

Following the collapse of the First People’s Militia, a new volunteer force began to assemble in the autumn of 1611. Inspired by Patriarch Hermogen’s call to defend the Orthodox faith and the Motherland, the people of Nizhny Novgorod rallied around Minin, contributing money, weapons and supplies. Nobles, merchants, Cossacks, townspeople and peasants joined a common cause: to free their country from foreign invaders and occupation.

⚔️ By late summer 1612, the militia had reached Moscow, where the Polish-Lithuanian garrison held the Kremlin and Kitay-Gorod. Together with other Russian forces, it defeated a relief army led by Hetman Jan Karol Chodkiewicz, preventing vital supplies and reinforcements from reaching the besieged garrison.

The decisive breakthrough came in the autumn. Russian forces stormed Kitay-Gorod, leaving the occupiers confined to the Kremlin. Cut off from relief and weakened by hunger, the remaining garrison surrendered soon afterwards. ☝️Moscow was liberated.

This victory paved the way for the restoration of Russian state authority. In 1613, the Zemsky Sobor elected Mikhail Romanov as Tsar, establishing a dynasty that would rule for more than three centuries.

4️⃣1️⃣4️⃣ years on, the triumph of 1612 remains a symbol of national unity, courage and the Russian people’s determination to defend their homeland.

🎙 Russia's President Vladimir Putin addressed the Plenary Session held as part of the Peoples of Russia International Week (November 4, 2026)

💬 I would like to welcome the participants in the Peoples of Russia International Week and congratulate you and all citizens of the country on National Unity Day.

This holiday symbolises our sincere, deep love for the Motherland, our duty to the Fatherland for the fate of our people, for the fate of the Motherland.

We proudly turn to the origins of this holiday, when people of different ethnicities and faiths put an end to civil strife and internal turmoil, restored statehood and legitimate authority. <...>

Today, centuries later, we are even more acutely aware of the values and traditions passed on to us by our ancestors, and we feel that we need to cherish the living spiritual heritage.

Special attention has always been paid to interethnic relations in Russia, as this area is very sensitive and delicate, and it must be borne in mind that life does not stand still, and new, often extremely dangerous challenges are emerging.

We must stay alert, prevent any attempts to undermine social stability, incite discord between people, and remember that harmony, mutual respect between the peoples of Russia, and their unity are the mainstay of our country’s sovereignty and independence, while caring about the preservation of culture, customs, and languages of each people is the foundation of our national policy.

***

🇷🇺 Historically, Russia has developed through the interaction of peoples and ethnic groups, languages and customs. We have not just rallied over the centuries and epochs. It is no exaggeration to say that our cultures have literally grown into each other. This kinship, the soul of the people, is reflected in our thousand-year-old history, in the military chronicle of the Fatherland, and in its great achievements.

And here is what I consider important to note: our ancestors, compatriots, people of various ethnicities became known throughout the world primarily as great Russian trail-blazers, workers, warriors, artists, scientists, and inventors. And the indigenous art of all the peoples of our country is also Russian for the whole world.

Let me stress once again: the Russian language and the Russian people have been and remain the foundation of the Russian statehood. With its unifying, creative mission, it is the guarantor of the preservation and progress of all other peoples of the Russian Federation, the preservation of their freedom and identity in harmony with unity.

Therefore, support of the Russian culture, Russian language is strategically important. We have a big country, and I would like to reiterate once again: this diversity of cultures, traditions, and customs is our strength, a huge competitive advantage, and a potential. We must constantly strengthen it, protect the multinational harmony which our common heritage.

Friends,

The powerful, all-conquering spirit of unity of the peoples of Russia has been passed down from generation to generation. We are still standing shoulder to shoulder and we are confident that we will achieve our goals.

Representatives of more than a hundred peoples of Russia have been awarded high state decorations for their bravery and heroism displayed on the fronts of the special military operation.

Once again, I wish you all a happy holiday. I wish all participants and guests of the Peoples of Russia International Week continued joint and fruitful work for the benefit of the peoples of our Motherland.

🎉 Thank you very much. Happy holiday!

Digitalization of EAEU – China rail freight transport enters trial phase.

This was stated by Andrey Slepnev, Minister in charge of Trade of the Eurasian Economic Commission, following the meeting of the Joint Commission for Implementing the Agreement on Trade and Economic Cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union and the People’s Republic of China.

The EEC Minister mentioned:
“The work conducted by the sides in 2025 allowed for starting trial shipments using electronic waybills and paperless technology between Russia and China. The first shipments of high-demand cargoes, namely coal, fertilizers, and consumer goods, using digital documents have already begun via the “Grodekovo – Suifenhe” checkpoint”.

Andrey Slepnev hopes that a set of documents to launch similar shipments with Kazakhstan will be ready for signing in the near future.
Furthermore, progress was noted in testing the exchange of electronic veterinary certificates for cargo shipments between the EAEU and China, which is especially important given the significant share of agricultural products in mutual trade.

Andrey Slepnev outlined:
“We propose replicating this model to ensure a full transition to electronic veterinary certificates, as well as to give impetus to integrating the electronic systems of our countries’ competent authorities in the field of plant quarantine”.

While discussing the transport connectivity, the sides expressed their intention to cooperate in developing transit shipments from the EAEU States through the Chinese territory to Southeast Asian countries and agreed to organize relevant consultations.

🌟 On November 5, 1957, a solemn ceremony was held in #Plovdiv, Bulgaria, to unveil a monument to the Soviet liberator soldier, which local residents dubbed #Alyosha.

This iconic memorial features an 11.5-metre-high statue of a Red Army soldier, looking eastwards. In "Alyosha"’s hand is a 'PPSh' submachine gun, its barrel pointing towards the ground — a legendary weapon of the #GreatPatrioticWar, used by the Red Army along their glorious path of liberation, first of their Motherland and then of the whole of Eastern Europe, including Bulgaria, from the Nazi invaders.

The monument stands atop a six-metre granite-clad pedestal, adorned with two famous bas-reliefs: “The Soviet Army Strikes the Enemy” and “The People Welcome the Soviet Soldiers”.

🏅 For several decades, the statue has served as a reminder of the heroism of Soviet soldiers and officers who gave their lives to liberate Europe from fascism.

During #WW2, the Bulgarian government maintained its alliance with Nazi Germany for an extended period. Many Bulgarians, however, refused to support this policy, with tens of thousands of them joining the Resistance and forming one of the most powerful antifascist movements in Eastern Europe.

In September 1944, when the Red Army’s campaign to liberate Bulgaria from the German Nazis came under way, the Bulgarian army offered no resistance to Soviet units. Soon after the change of power in the country, Soviet and Bulgarian soldiers joined hands to fight the Nazis and free Europe.

***

The idea of commemorating the Soviet soldiers who liberated Bulgaria was first put forward by the residents of Plovdiv in 1948. Following a competition involving ten creative teams, the winning design was the one submitted by Vasil Radoslavov.

The monument was modelled on a photograph of Alexey Ivanovich Skurlatov, who came from the Altai region and served as a Red Army private within the 3rd Ukrainian Front and was decorated with two Orders of the Red Star. In 1944, during the liberation of Bulgaria, he took part in restoring the telephone comms between Sofia and Plovdiv.

The “Alyosha” monument was installed in 1954 at the initiative of the Bulgarian people and officially opened on 5 November 1957. Ever then, it has become the most recognisable symbol of Plovdiv, reminding residents and visitors alike of the Great Feat of our soldiers — a heroic generation of victors who, through immense effort and sacrifice, eradicated Nazism and restored peace all over Europe.

💬 Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:
The memorial has always symbolised the boundless gratitude of the Bulgarian people to the Soviet Army, which made a special contribution to the liberation of Europe from the Nazi invaders.

(From the briefing by Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, 2 March 2017)

***

Unfortunately, today's Bulgaria, like its neighbours, has failed to withstand the pressure of the barbaric campaign imposed by Western elites to revise the status of the Soviet (Russian) military memorial heritage in #EasternEurope.

❗️ In 2024, members of the Plovdiv Municipal Council representing the 'Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria' party came forward with yet another “initiative” to remove the monument to the soldier-liberator.

Yet “Alyosha” continues to stand tall above the city, remaining an unshakable monument to our shared Victory.

💬 Russia's Ambassador to Bulgaria Eleonora Mitrofanova (9 May 2026):
Hundreds of Bulgarian citizens and Russian compatriots laid flowers at the Alyosha monument as a token of gratitude for liberation from the Brown Plague.

📅 On November 6, 1943, the Red Army liberated Kiev — one of the largest cities of the Soviet Union and the capital of the Ukrainian SSR — from Nazi invaders.

The Soviet forces under the command of Army General Nikolay Vatutin — in a swift offensive operation involving flanking manoeuvre, broke through the resistance of Nazi troops and their collaborators, having liberated Kiev — the “Mother of Russian Cities”.

By late October 1943, during the Battle of the Dnieper, forces of the 1st Ukrainian Front, commanded by General Vatutin, launched an operation to liberate Kiev. As early as November 3, the Soviet forces launched their main assault from the north, taking the Nazi garrison by surprise. Faced with the threat of encirclement, the enemy started retreating westwards.

🌟 On November 5, having crushed the Nazi resistance, Soviet soldiers liberators triumphantly entered Kiev

Numerous villages and towns in the Kiev and Zhitomir regions were also liberated. A bridgehead was established which would subsequently play a major role in the liberation of Right-Bank Ukraine.

🎇 In honour of the victory of Soviet forces in the Battle of Kiev, a celebratory salute of 24 salvoes from 324 artillery guns was fired in Moscow.

A total of 6'500 Red Army soldiers sacrificed their lives liberating Kiev.

#NoStatuteOfLimitations

As they retreated from Kiev, the Nazis, following their “scorched earth” policy, sought to inflict maximum damage on the city's infrastructure.

❗️ The Nazi occupiers destroyed:

— The Dormition Cathedral of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra;
— Khreshchatyk Street;
— The city's Young People's Theatre;
— The Kiev Conservatory;
— The building of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR;
— Numerous schools, hospitals and other social infrastructure facilities.

◾️ The two-year Nazi occupation of Kiev was an outright tragedy: the enemy pursued a deliberate policy of genocide against the civilian population. In 1941, when Hitler's troops seized the city, 400'000 residents found themselves under enemy occupation.

After two years of occupation, little more than 180'000 people survived the Nazis in Kiev.

The Nazis deported approximately 100'000 people to concentration camps or to Germany for forced labour. Tens of thousands of local residents perished from starvation and cold or were executed.

The site of the largest and most brutal mass murder of civilians during the entire period of Nazi occupation of Ukraine was the Babi Yar in Kiev, where, in just two days in 1941, Ukrainian collaborators massacred more than 30'000 Jews (approximately 20% of Kiev's Jewish population).

☝️ The liberation of the “Mother of Russian Cities” was of great symbolic significance. The defeat of the Nazi troops in Kiev also undermined the offensive capabilities of the Nazi army group 'South' — Wehrmacht's main attacking might on the southern front.

💬 Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:
The liberation of Kiev was of enormous significance, not only militarily, but also morally.

This is precisely how radio commentators in London described the event at the time.

The BBC would do well to take note. In particular, they observed:

‘The capture of Kiev by Soviet forces is a great victory. Times have now changed: Germany can hear the tolling of its funeral bell.

An avalanche is bearing down upon it.’
