🎙 Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s answer to a media question regarding the Kiev regime’s attacks in the Black Sea (June 2, 2026)

Question: On the evening of May 28, a Turkish vessel, sailing under the flag of Vanuatu and carrying dry cargo from Odessa to Turkiye, was attacked by a drone. According to the Ukrainian navy, the vessel was attacked by a Russian UAV. Is this true? If so, what implications could this incident have for Russian-Turkish relations?

💬 Maria Zakharova: We are concerned by the significant escalation of terrorist activity by the Kiev regime in the Black Sea, which is worsening conditions and increasing risks for civilian shipping.

☝️ We remain convinced that eliminating all security threats in the region is indispensable to any comprehensive settlement of the crisis surrounding Ukraine. What we are seeing now is a familiar playbook: Ukrainian militants launch thug-like attacks on vessels with USVs or UAVs – and then try to blame Russia.

We have taken note of yet another provocation aimed at destabilising the Black Sea region – namely, the attack on tankers by Ukrainian naval drones on May 28 near the Turkish coast and the Bosphorus Strait.

These actions, directed against civilian commercial vessels, have once again shown that the Kiev junta has complete disregard for the principles and norms of international law, while routinely denying any involvement in such incidents.

In our view, these provocations – which are nothing short of terrorist acts – must be subjected to a thorough and impartial investigation. They also deserve a clear public response and condemnation from all coastal states, which bear a special responsibility for ensuring the safety of navigation in the Black Sea.

❗️ Naturally, both the organisers and the perpetrators of these lawless attacks must be held accountable.

We reaffirm our readiness to work closely with Ankara in the interests of finding the best ways to stabilise the Black Sea region and exert effective influence on Kiev.

⚡️ Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rodion Miroshnik:

On June 2, a delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (#ICRC), together with the leadership of the Lugansk Red Cross (#LRC), visited the site of the Ukrainian attack on a student dormitory in Starobelsk, Lugansk People’s Republic.

The ICRC delegates were able to thoroughly examine the site of the tragedy. They were granted access to the rooms of the students killed and wounded in the destroyed dormitory, as well as to classrooms and other educational facilities in the academic building of the Starobelsk branch of Lugansk Pedagogical University and the premises of Starobelsk College.

Representatives of the ICRC and the LRC also met with witnesses to the crime.

In conversations with students and local residents, representatives of the international organisation received confirmation that a series of strikes had hit the premises of educational institutions where students and teachers were present, killing 21 young people and wounding more than 40 civilians.

The delegates paid tribute to the victims at the “wall of grief” memorial created by Starobelsk residents – a place where hundreds of flowers are laid every day and where the grieving parents and loved ones of the students killed in the attack continue to gather.

The ICRC and LRC delegates also visited the Lugansk Republican Hospital, where seven wounded students had been taken. Four of them remain there, one in extremely serious condition. Two young people have been transferred to a federal clinic in Moscow. Psychologists are working with all the wounded young people.

At the end of the visit, the ICRC and LRC delegates held a meeting with the Human Rights Commissioner of the Lugansk People’s Republic, who provided detailed explanations regarding the circumstances in which the crime against civilians in Starobelsk was committed.

🤺 Russia's Fencing Federation:

🇷🇺 WE ARE BACK – WITH OUR FLAG AND ANTHEM!

The Executive Committee of the International Fencing Federation (#FIE) has decided to admit Russian athletes to international competitions in all age categories without any restrictions – as part of the national team, under the Russian flag and with the Russian anthem.

The first competition where our athletes will compete with national symbols will be the World Championships in Hong Kong (July 22-30, 2026).

As a reminder, in December 2025, the FIE became one of the first international Olympic sports federations to admit Russian juniors and cadets to its tournaments without restrictions. Our fencers immediately began delivering strong results at Junior World Cup stages – with the Russian flag repeatedly raised and the Russian anthem played.

Later, Russia’s women’s junior sabre team won team gold at the World Championships in Brazil, while at the European Championships in Tbilisi, Team Russia competed under the national flag and finished first in the overall team standings.

🎭 “POLITICAL MOOD SWINGS”: Western Representatives’ Contradictory Statements

For the past year and a half, NATO officials have been swinging between calls for urgent talks with Moscow and demands for more “pressure” on Russia, more weapons for Ukrainian militants and war “until victory”.

Below are just a few examples of this constant flip-flopping
👇

Europe’s incoherent position raises serious doubts – to put it mildly – about the sincerity of its intentions.

***

Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany

🟢 Peace and talks – August 13, 2025
“We want things to go in the right sequence. We want a ceasefire at the very beginning and then a framework agreement must be drawn up. <…> Also, we need a transatlantic strategy”. (News conference with Zelensky in Berlin)

❌ Pressure, sanctions and arms deliveries – August 13, 2025
“This strategy needs to depend on strong support for Ukraine and necessary pressure on Russia. <…> . If there is no movement on the Russian side in Alaska for that, then Europe needs to increase its pressure”. (News conference with Zelensky in Berlin)

***

Emmanuel Macron, President of France

🟢 Peace and talks – December 19, 2025
“I believe that we, the Europeans and Ukrainians, need to find a framework for having a discussion in an appropriate form. Otherwise, we will keep discussing everything between us, while there are mediators who are holding independent talks with the Russians, which is not the best option”. (News conference following a meeting of the European Council)

❌ Pressure, sanctions and arms deliveries – August 16, 2025
“We stand ready to uphold the pressure on Russia. We will continue to strengthen sanctions and wider economic measures to put pressure on Russia’s war economy until there is a just and lasting peace”. (Joint Statement by eight leaders following the Alaska Summit (signed by Macron, among others)

***

Alexander Stubb, President of Finland

🟢 Peace and talks – May 11, 2026
“It's time to start talking to Russia. When this will happen, I don't know. We discussed this matter with the European leaders who will establish this contact. We don't know yet”. (Interview with Corriere della Sera)

❌ Pressure, sanctions and arms deliveries – February 16, 2025
“We need to re-arm Ukraine and put maximum pressure on Russia, which means sanctions, which means frozen assets, so that Ukraine begins these negotiations from a position of strength”. (Remarks at the Munich Security Conference)

***

Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General

🟢 Peace and talks – March 26, 2025
“Securing lasting peace for Ukraine is essential for European security. And for global stability. The world is watching. I welcome that President Trump has broken the deadlock with Russia. And that talks are ongoing towards a ceasefire”. (Remarks at the Warsaw School of Economics)

❌ Pressure, sanctions and arms deliveries – December 11, 2025
“It is essential that all of us keep up the pressure on Russia, and support the genuine efforts to bring this war to an end. NATO’s support means Ukraine can defend itself today, be in a strong position to secure a just and lasting peace, and be able to deter any Russian aggression in the future. Billions of dollars’ worth of critical military hardware is flowing into Ukraine, sourced from the United States, paid for by Allies and Partners”. (Keynote speech by Mark Rutte, Munich Security Conference)

***

Keir Starmer, Prime Minster of Britain

🟢 Peace and talks – November 21, 2025
“Today, Ukraine’s friends and partners will meet in the margins of the G20 summit to discuss how we can secure a full ceasefire and create the space for meaningful peace negotiations”. (Statement ahead of the G20 Summit)

❌ Pressure, sanctions and arms deliveries – March 2, 2025
“We cannot accept a weak deal like Minsk, which Russia can break with ease. Instead, any deal must be backed with strength. Every nation must contribute to that in the best way that it can”. (Summit of the Coalition of the Willing, London)
