Feelings of social isolation can drive people to purchase items to soothe their emotions for social validation. Study finds how a private attempt to heal emotional pain transforms into a public display of status that reinforces compulsive buying. Read Full…
* 😔 New research published in *Deviant Behavior* reveals a three-stage psychological progression leading to online shopping addiction: loneliness drives compensatory consumption to soothe emotional pain, which then escalates to conspicuous consumption for social validation, ultimately culminating in addiction.

* 📈 A study of 364 Taiwanese adults (aged 19-60, primarily millennials) used path analysis to identify this sequence. Results showed loneliness predicts compensatory buying, which in turn predicts conspicuous buying, and this combined behavior strongly predicts online shopping addiction.

* 💡 The research suggests loneliness doesn't directly cause addiction. Instead, it's the pathway through emotional compensation and seeking social status that increases the risk of developing an uncontrollable shopping habit.

⭐ Political ideology influences attitudes toward addictive products like alcohol, tobacco, and gambling, with conservatism linked to more favorable views due to a higher sense of personal control.

⭐ Across ten studies involving diverse datasets (YouGov, Yelp) and countries (UK, US, Canada, Australia, NZ), conservatives consistently showed more positive attitudes and behaviors toward addictive items compared to liberals.

⭐ The research, published in the Journal of Marketing by Jasmina Ilicic and Stacey Brennan, found that a heightened sense of agency among conservatives leads them to underestimate the dangers of addictive products.

⭐ Personalized threat messaging in public health campaigns proved more effective in reducing favorable attitudes toward addictive products among conservatives, suggesting tailored communication is key.

Mental health workers may hold negative beliefs about people who misuse opioids Read Full Article #MentalHealth #OpioidCrisis #StigmaReduction
🧠 A University of Georgia study found mental health workers hold more stigmatizing views toward people with opioid addiction than the general population.

🏥 In 2024, over 82,000 people died from opioid overdoses, with millions more struggling with opioid use disorder in the U.S.

📊 Researchers surveyed 1,600 individuals in 13 Southern states. Mental health workers and first responders were more likely to agree with negative statements about people with opioid use problems compared to other participants.

💡 The study suggests increased training for mental health workers and first responders, focusing on open-minded listening and non-judgment, could help reduce stigma.
