🧠 Research from the University of Colorado Anschutz, published in JAMA Network Open, found that people were about 19 percentage points less likely to recommend life-sustaining treatment for seriously ill dementia patients compared to non-dementia patients, even when advance directives requested such care.
📝 The study of nearly 6,000 U.S. adults highlighted that participants recommended life-sustaining treatment for dementia patients with an advance directive in 41.0% of scenarios, versus 66.3% for non-dementia patients with a similar directive.
🤝 Decisions were influenced by both documented wishes (advance directives) and the preferences of the surrogate decision-maker, emphasizing the need for ongoing conversations about patient values rather than just filling out forms.
