Running from Death. Changes in Alcohol Intake, Fitness and All-Cause Mortality in the HUNT Study, Norway. Read Full Article #PublicHealth #Alcohol #Fitness
🏃 Fitness May Mitigate Alcohol's Mortality Risk: A Norwegian study (HUNT Study) analyzed 24,853 adults from 1995-2008. While increased alcohol intake was linked to higher mortality, maintaining good cardiorespiratory fitness appeared to lessen this association.
📉 Declining Fitness Increases Mortality Risk: Those who remained unfit had higher mortality risks. Decreasing fitness also increased mortality risk for those who consistently abstained from or drank alcohol within recommended limits.
💪 Fitness is a Stronger Predictor: The study concluded that changes in cardiorespiratory fitness were a better predictor of mortality than changes in alcohol intake alone. Maintaining fitness above the lowest 20% for age and sex helped reduce the link between alcohol intake changes and overall death risk.
