Moderate to heavy drinking tends to be associated with increased bodily inflammation, even for individuals who maintain a highly nutritious diet. The study provides evidence that eating well might not be enough to counter the harmful physical effects of frequent…
🍺 New research in Alcohol and Alcoholism suggests moderate to heavy drinking increases bodily inflammation, even with a healthy diet.
🔬 Scientists Kailyn Lowder and Jimikaye Beck Courtney at UNC Chapel Hill investigated the interplay of diet and alcohol on chronic inflammation in 91 adults (ages 21-44, BMI 25+).
📊 Habitual alcohol consumption, not daily averages, was linked to detrimental inflammatory markers. Females drinking moderately (4-7 drinks/week) and heavily showed significantly higher C-reactive protein than light drinkers, a difference not seen in males. Heavy drinkers of both sexes had higher tumor necrosis factor alpha.
🍎 While a healthy diet showed a small protective effect against inflammation, it did not cancel out the increased inflammation from moderate to heavy drinking. Researchers advise individuals with BMI > 25 to consider limiting alcohol to 3 drinks per week.
