Scientists identify brain regions associated with auditory hallucinations in borderline personality disorder. These physical brain differences tend to appear in areas involved in language processing, sensory integration, and emotional regulation. Read Full…
🧠 Research published in Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging reveals distinct structural brain differences in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) who experience auditory hallucinations. These differences were found in areas related to language, sensory processing, and emotion, suggesting shared biological mechanisms for hallucinations across different mental health conditions.

MRI scans on 76 participants (20 BPD with voices, 26 BPD without voices, 30 healthy controls) showed reduced gray matter in frontal, parietal, cingulate cortex, and cerebellum regions for BPD patients compared to controls. Notably, BPD patients who heard voices had less gray matter in occipital regions (traditionally for vision, but involved in sensory integration) and the inferior frontal gyrus (language processing).

The study, authored by Mert Koc and Robert C. Wolf among others, found that higher symptom severity and distress in hallucinating BPD patients correlated with lower gray matter in temporal, frontal, parietal lobes, and cerebellum. This indicates a complex interplay of cognitive, sensory, and emotional brain systems in these experiences.

Oxytocin nasal spray may help people with borderline personality disorder engage in self-compassion meditation. Findings suggest a potential new way to support people who often find self-compassion practices difficult or uncomfortable. Read Full Article …
🧠 A nasal spray of the hormone oxytocin may improve the ability to create and hold comforting mental images during compassion-based meditation for individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD).

🔬 In a pilot study of 18 participants with BPD, those receiving oxytocin scored significantly higher on the mental imagery dimension of a compassion practice quality scale compared to a placebo group (average scores of ~77 vs. ~67 out of 100).

⚠️ Researchers caution that this was a small pilot study, and further research is needed to confirm these findings, assess their impact on BPD symptoms, and understand individual responses. The oxytocin spray was well-tolerated with no reported adverse side effects.
