Wildfires have caused accelerating deforestation in California forests over the past 30 years, especially at high elevations, while replanting efforts have fallen behind. Read Full Article #Wildfires #Deforestation #Reforestation
🔥 A UC Davis study found California's wildfire-driven deforestation has accelerated over the past three decades (1991-2023), with conifer forest losses increasing exponentially, particularly on USDA Forest Service and private lands.
🌲 Between 2001-2023, California's deforestation rate was between 0.25% and 0.47% annually, significantly higher than the global average of 0.15%. Reforestation efforts are not keeping pace.
📈 Reforestation needs surged after 2020, with California losing 6%-11% of its conifer forests. Only about 8% of high-priority and less than 3% of acute-priority reforestation areas on Forest Service lands were addressed during the study period.
