📈 Depression symptoms have significantly increased among U.S. college students over the last 15 years, particularly after 2016. The escalation is most pronounced for women, racial minorities, and students facing financial difficulties, according to a study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.
📊 The analysis of data from 560,000 students (2007-2022) reveals that all nine symptoms measured by the PHQ-9 questionnaire increased, with suicidal ideation showing a 153.9% rise, followed by psychomotor agitation (79.6%) and trouble concentrating (77.7%).
👩🏾🤝👩🏽 Women and intersex students reported steeper annual increases in nearly all symptoms compared to men. While cognitive symptoms like worthlessness and depressed mood rose uniformly across racial groups, physical symptoms like sleep and fatigue problems disproportionately increased among racial and ethnic minority students.
💰 Students experiencing "always stressful" financial situations reported higher levels of all depression symptoms and faster yearly increases, with this gap widening over time.
