Comedy is funnier when it is easier to process, new psychology study finds. Humour often depends on incongruity: something happens that conflicts with what an audience expects. If a joke is too confusing, meaningless, or threatening, it is less likely to succeed.…
😂 Easier Processing Boosts Comedy
Research in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology reveals that making jokes easier to understand (processing fluency) can make them funnier. This is because ease of processing helps audiences grasp the unexpected elements in humor.
🎤 Four Experiments, 999 Participants
Drew Gorenz and Norbert Schwarz conducted four experiments with 999 U.S. university students. They tested the impact of processing fluency on internet memes, jokes, and nicknames, finding that easier-to-process content was consistently rated as funnier.
💡 Fluency & Coherence Key to Humor
Degraded memes were less funny, and participants preferred fluent punchlines (like rhyming or alliterating ones) 76.45% of the time. Alliterating nicknames were also found to be easier to process and funnier. The benefit of fluency wasn't due to making aggressive jokes seem less threatening.
