📈 88% of adults see opioid overdose deaths as a very serious issue, with high agreement across political lines.

📊 A 2025 national survey by Weill Cornell Medicine revealed a shift in perceived responsibility for the opioid crisis, with more people, including conservatives, now holding pharmaceutical companies accountable, alongside individuals.

⚖️ Political differences persist: conservatives and moderates lean towards individuals being responsible for reducing overdose deaths, while liberals increasingly point to pharmaceutical companies, potentially impacting future drug policy.

🚫 Stigma remains high, with 38% unwilling to have a person with opioid addiction as a neighbor and 58% unwilling to have them marry into their family, with this sentiment significantly higher among conservatives.

New analysis shows ideology, not science, drove the global prohibition of psychedelics. Findings suggest that current international drug laws may need to be reevaluated to remove unnecessary barriers to modern medical research. Read Full Article #PsychedelicPolicy…
🔬 A study in Contemporary Drug Problems suggests that the 1971 UN decision to heavily restrict psychedelics was driven by political ideology and media panic, not scientific evidence of medical harm. Historical documents from 1963-1971 reveal that anxieties about youth rebellion, social decay, and an "epidemic of drug abuse", amplified by sensationalized media reports, influenced diplomats more than scientific data on the substances' low addiction risk and physiological safety.

🏛️ Cold War tensions between the US and USSR played a significant role in shaping the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances. Eastern Bloc countries used the issue to criticize Western societies, while Western nations emphasized strict drug control as a public health measure, ultimately forging a global consensus for the strictest level of legal control on psychedelics, alongside highly addictive substances.

⚖️ Unlike sedatives and stimulants, which were supported by powerful pharmaceutical companies, psychedelics lacked major industry defenders. This absence of economic protection made them an easier target for international prohibition, as competing interests like culture, geopolitics, and finance overshadowed considerations of their actual risks or therapeutic potential during the treaty negotiations.

Recreational cannabis laws may displace illegal cannabis markets: US states adopting recreational cannabis laws in addition to medical cannabis laws experienced a 45% relative reduction in average cannabis seizure counts, compared with states that had only…
📊 Recreational cannabis laws show potential to shrink illegal markets, according to a Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health study.

🚨 States with recreational cannabis laws saw a 45% reduction in cannabis seizure counts compared to those with only medical laws. This effect was observed both immediately and one year after adoption.

⚖️ This shift may be due to consumers moving to legal markets, reducing illegal supply, or law enforcement reprioritizing resources towards other drugs like fentanyl.

📊 A study analyzing Gallup Poll data from 2000-2025 reveals that fewer than half of Americans consistently perceived progress against illicit drugs, with perceptions hitting a low of 23% in 2023 before rising to 44% in 2025.
