🌐 Learning from AI summaries leads to shallower knowledge than web search. 🤖 Read Full Article #AIsummaries #ShallowKnowledge #WebSearchAdvantage #OriginalityLoss #InvestInLearning
💡 Individuals learning from AI-generated summaries develop shallower knowledge compared to using standard web searches.

💡 Those using AI summaries felt less invested in forming advice, resulting in sparser and less original content.

💡 Research published in PNAS Nexus found these differences persist even when AI summaries include real-time web links.

Black and Latino teens report having significantly more digital literacy skills such as detecting online disinformation than their white peers—particularly content related to race and ethnicity Read Full Article #DigitalLiteracy #Disinformation #RacialJustice…
💡 Black and Latino teens demonstrate higher digital literacy skills, especially in identifying online disinformation related to race and ethnicity, compared to their white peers. They are quicker to spot false claims, fact-check, and provide corrective content.

💡 These sophisticated digital skills are largely developed through lived experiences navigating online racism, rather than formal school instruction.

💡 A study by UC Riverside and USC found that Black and Latino youth are more likely to challenge racist content by creating their own posts and sharing credible sources, often doing this work for their communities.

💡 White youth were less likely to question misleading posts concerning race, not due to intelligence, but because they haven't faced the same level of digital racism, the study suggests.

A teacher-incentive program has led to striking long-term benefits for students, including lower rates of felony arrest and reduced reliance on government assistance in early adulthood, a new study on data of 41,529 eighth-grade students reports Read Full…
✅ A South Carolina teacher-incentive program (TAP) shows significant long-term student benefits: 5% higher high school graduation, 30% lower felony arrests, and 4% less reliance on government aid in early adulthood.

✅ The study, co-authored by UC Riverside professor Ozkan Eren, analyzed data from 41,529 eighth-graders in high-need districts, comparing those in TAP schools (2007-2010) with others.

✅ TAP combines teacher performance pay with feedback and observation, proving cost-effective with an estimated $1 spent generating $14 in social benefits.

Harvard life science PhD students outperform ChatGPT by 2 letter grades Read Full Article #ScienceNews #LifeSciences #ChatGPTComparison
🎓 ChatGPT underperforms doctoral students on take-home molecular biology assignments, especially in interpreting scientific graphs and raw data.

📉 GAI struggles with "apply" level tasks requiring experimental controls and specific rationales, often providing vague or broad answers.

🖼️ Image interpretation is a significant weakness for ChatGPT, with poor performance on DNA footprinting and BLI graph analysis, even with GPT-4o's multimodal capabilities.

💡 New assessment strategies proposed include demanding precision in text-based questions, focusing on "apply" level tasks, and incorporating image interpretation with multiple-choice formats to leverage GAI's weaknesses.

School cellphone bans deliver benefits – but not right away Read Full Article #EducationTech #StudentWellbeing #PhonePolicyDebate
📱 Cellphone Bans in Schools: Delayed Benefits Found
A Stanford study of over 43,000 U.S. middle and high schools over three years found that strict cellphone bans, using locked pouches, reduced usage but showed no immediate impact on test scores, attendance, or attention. Initial disciplinary incidents rose, and student well-being fell.

⏳ Long-Term Gains Emerge
After the first year, disciplinary issues decreased. By the third year of pouch policies, student well-being improved significantly compared to before the bans.

📈 Test Score Nuances Revealed
While overall test scores saw minimal change, high school math scores showed a slight increase. Middle schools experienced a minor dip in test scores, potentially due to younger students' impulsivity.

💡 More Research Needed
Stanford scholars emphasize that effective, phone-free learning environments are not quick fixes. Further study is required to understand non-test-score-related learning effects and evolving student social dynamics.

Given permission to use AI, most college students show surprising restraint in their final essays. Students largely rely on AI for brainstorming and research rather than having it write essays for them wholesale. Read Full Article #AIinEducation #StudentWriting…
• 💡 College students use AI tools primarily for brainstorming and research, not wholesale essay writing, when guided in writing classes.

• ✍️ A study found only 18.6% of student prompts asked ChatGPT to generate original text; most focused on revision, explanations, or clarifying concepts.

• 🌍 Non-native English speakers, contrary to expectations, used AI less for comprehension and more for refining their own writing, integrating fewer AI-generated passages into final essays than native speakers.

Neuroscientists shed light on the illusion of learning from short videos. Watching rapid, fragmented clips captures sensory attention but impairs the deep cognitive processing required to pack away long-term memories compared to viewing a slightly longer,…
🧠 Digesting educational content via short, fragmented social media videos actually reduces your ability to remember the information. Research published in Communications Psychology found that the rapid pace and flashy stimuli impair the deep cognitive processing needed for long-term memory storage.

🧠 In three studies, researchers Meiting Wei and Guang-Heng Dong of Yunnan Normal University found that college students who watched short, chopped-up clips performed worse on memory quizzes compared to those who viewed a continuous video, even with identical factual content. This effect persisted even when students intentionally tried to focus.

🧠 Brain scans revealed that watching continuous videos led to deep synchronization across brain regions involved in attention and memory. In contrast, short videos caused synchronization only in basic processing areas, indicating that cognitive resources were used for reorienting to stimuli rather than absorbing information.

Students are more likely to cheat under intense pressure or when they rationalize the behavior Read Full Article #AcademicIntegrity #CheatingPrevention #StudentBehavior
🎓 Intense academic pressure and justifying the behavior are key drivers for university students in the Philippines cheating, according to a study of 803 students.

💡 An Artificial Neural Network model proved most effective in predicting which students are likely to cheat, based on their perceptions of cheating, moral judgments, and motivations.

📚 The research highlights the need for clear policies, ethical guidance, and awareness in tech-enabled classrooms to combat cheating and promote genuine learning.

Researchers from UC Berkeley recently found that spending just 10 minutes relying on an AI tool significantly impairs the user's ability to focus and persist with difficult tasks. Read Full Article #AIFocus #Cognition #TechImpact
💡 A study co-authored by UC Berkeley researcher Brian Christian found that just 10 minutes of using AI tools significantly impairs the ability to focus and persist with difficult tasks.

🔬 In experiments involving hundreds of participants, those given AI assistance for fraction problems or SAT reading comprehension showed a sharp drop in accuracy and persistence once the AI tool was removed, unlike those who worked without AI.

🧠 The findings suggest that overreliance on AI for quick answers erodes cognitive fitness and the "productive struggle" crucial for developing research strengths and passions.
