Global warming has accelerated significantly since 2015. Over the past 10 years, the warming rate has been around 0.35°C per decade, compared with just under 0.2°C per decade on average from 1970 to 2015.

Fifty years of environmental policies like the Clean Water Act have successfully restored freshwater ecosystems, a new study finds. Analyzing data from 1970 to 2023 across seven major U.S. river basins, researchers linked falling heavy metal levels to the expansion of 71 fish and 171 insect species.

Two-thirds of new US homes are in an HOA. Of 31 rulebooks analyzed, a third restricted solar panels and a quarter banned clotheslines — yet where native plants were required and lawn size capped, front-yard native cover hit 42% vs 7%, a 6x gain in bee, bird…
🏡 ~66% of new US homes are built under homeowners association (HOA) rules, and ~33% of existing homes. HOAs often create barriers to environmentally friendly practices, like water-saving landscaping and renewable energy.
🌱 Maryland passed a law in 2021 after a homeowner's decade-long effort to create bird and pollinator habitat was challenged by their HOA, declaring turfgrass mandates or restrictions on drought-tolerant yards "unreasonable limitations." California has even stricter protections.
📊 Research in Ingham County, Michigan, found HOAs frequently imposed barriers to sustainability: 71% had minimum home size rules, nearly half required lawn maintenance, and one-third limited household energy production like solar panels. Only a small percentage of provisions encouraged sustainability.
☀️ States are increasingly intervening, with laws in states like Michigan, Minnesota, Arizona, and Delaware preventing HOAs from prohibiting solar panel installation. Nine states have "right-to-dry" laws preventing clothesline bans.

How former Brazilian President Bolsonaro's statements destroyed the rainforest by publishing posts opposing forest conservation. Research found as a result of the messages, people changed their expectations of the extent to which they will be prosecuted for…
🌳 International study led by the University of Bonn reveals former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro's anti-conservation statements on Twitter correlated with accelerated Amazon deforestation in 2019.
🗣️ Researchers estimate Bolsonaro's "power of words" contributed to the destruction of up to 1,700 sq km of forest, an area nearly double the size of Berlin, by creating a perception of lower punishment risk for environmental law infringements.
📈 The study, published in The Journal of Politics, found the impact was stronger in areas with high agricultural returns and where conservation policies had previously restricted deforestation, suggesting economic incentives played a key role.
