Hunter-gatherer societies are less unequal than many human societies, but they do show inequality; a review of 100s of different sources covering more than a century of ethnography shows that equality often results from people’s self-interested motives to…
🍖 Hunter-gatherer societies, like the Hadza of Tanzania, limit inequalities through deliberate effort and self-interest, not necessarily noble motives. Recent research analyzing over a century of data reveals that no society entirely lacked inequality, with examples like the Ju/’Hoansi controlling hunting territories and the Bayaka hoarding ritual knowledge.

⚖️ Gender and age often served as sources of inequality among hunter-gatherer groups. The Hadza gave preferential meat cuts to older men and respected better hunters more, while in many Australian societies, older men controlled ritual secrets and marriage choices for younger relatives.

🤝 Processes that limit inequality, such as food sharing and mockery of stingy individuals, often stem from self-interested motives. These actions, driven by desires for resources, status, and autonomy, are not necessarily acts of pure generosity.

🌍 Egalitarianism is best understood as a set of tools used to secure autonomy and resource access, rather than a state of perfect equality. These equality-creating processes are observable in hunter-gatherer societies and beyond, demonstrating their widespread reality.
