A father’s absence is linked to early puberty, but only if it happens during a crucial developmental window. Findings offer new insights into how early family environments might shape biological development over time. Read Full Article #DevelopmentalPsychology…
📈 A study in Biology of Sex Differences suggests that the timing of father absence in the first year of life is linked to earlier physical signs of puberty in both girls and boys.

🏠 Researchers analyzed data from 4,898 children in the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study. They identified four patterns of father absence, finding that early or consistent father absence was associated with earlier onset of breast development in girls and facial hair growth in boys by age nine.

👦👧 The study found similar patterns for both boys and girls, suggesting boys may be more sensitive to early family environments than previously thought. Researchers caution that these are associations, not direct causation, and other unmeasured factors may be involved.
