Despite growing evidence that GLP-1 medications improve health and are worth their cost, many American insurance plans still limit coverage. “Cost-effective” does not necessarily mean “cost-saving” for insurance companies. Read Full Article #GLP1 #HealthcarePolicy…
✅ Insurers often deny coverage for GLP-1 weight loss drugs, despite evidence of their effectiveness and value. A University of Mississippi study suggests insurers need to offer more than just the medication for long-term cost savings.

✅ Research indicates GLP-1s like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound are cost-effective, but their widespread use could still strain insurer budgets due to the large eligible patient population (40% of Americans are obese).

✅ Long-term cost savings from GLP-1s are not yet proven, as patients often stop treatment within a year and regain weight. For effectiveness, continuous support like dietitians and fitness programs, not just medication, is crucial.

✅ Compounded GLP-1 versions, while cheaper, carry significant risks due to unverified ingredients and manufacturing processes, prompting FDA warnings. Consulting a physician is advised for safety and to ensure FDA-approved medication.

GLP-1 weight-loss drugs linked to “low” but real risk of hair loss, study finds. Importantly, the most observed cases of hair loss linked to GPL-1 were reversible, as hair follicles remained intact, the authors said. Read Full Article #GLP1 #HairLoss #…
📊 New study in The BMJ reveals GLP-1 drugs, used for type 2 diabetes and obesity, are linked to a higher risk of hair loss compared to other diabetes medications.

📈 The risk is 37% higher than with SGLT-2 inhibitors and 68% higher than with DPP-4 inhibitors.

🌱 Most reported cases of hair loss were reversible, as hair follicles remained intact.

🤔 Researchers suggest rapid weight loss, calorie restriction, and hormonal changes associated with GLP-1 therapy may contribute to hair shedding.

📈 U.S. adolescents & young adults are increasingly using GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, with exclusive use rising from 88.2% (May-Nov 2022) to 96.1% (June 2025-Jan 2026) among those treated for obesity. Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) rates decreased from 11.6% to 3.7% in the same periods.

🧑‍⚕️ UT Southwestern researchers analyzed data from over 204,000 individuals aged 13-25 treated for obesity between May 2022 and January 2026. This study is the first national-scale analysis of combined GLP-1RA therapy and MBS in this age group.

💡 The findings highlight an "inflection point" in pediatric obesity treatment and emphasize the urgent need for evidence-based clinical guidelines to guide the integration of GLP-1 medications and bariatric surgery in youth.

👁️ A new study in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism found GLP-1 drugs (like Ozempic) are linked to an 18% lower risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in adults aged 60+ with obesity but no diabetes.

🔬 Researchers analyzed data from over 157,000 matched patients, comparing GLP-1 users to those on other weight-loss medications.

🤔 While the exact mechanism is unclear, potential reasons include a direct protective effect on the retina by reducing inflammation, or that greater weight loss achieved with GLP-1s contributes to reduced risk.

Weight loss drugs may help with mental health. People with bipolar disorder who were taking semaglutide (otherwise known as Ozempic or Wegovy), a type of GLP-1 medication, had significantly lower rates of psychiatric hospitalization compared with periods when they were not taking GLP-1 medications,"

GLP-1 weight-loss medication could slow aging and extend lifespan. Giving old mice semaglutide—commonly sold as Wegovy or Ozempic—extends their lifespan remarkably, a new study finds. Read Full Article #WeightLoss #AgingResearch #Semaglutide
🐁 A new study in mice suggests semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) can extend lifespan by about 12 percent when started in old age.

💪 In mice, semaglutide showed benefits in maintaining memory and blood sugar control, outperforming dieting in these areas.

🧬 Researchers found semaglutide mimics calorie restriction by reducing inflammation and improving blood sugar regulation, but also shows added benefits for memory and curiosity.

Large genetic study links GLP-1 receptor activation to improved mental well-being Read Full Article #Genetics #MentalHealth #GLP1R
💡 Activating the GLP-1 receptor, a target of popular weight-loss and diabetes drugs, is linked to better mental health and a lower risk of depression and bipolar disorder, according to a new genetic study published in Translational Psychiatry.

🧠 The research, led by Guoyi Yang, used genetic variations to mimic the effect of GLP-1 receptor activation, suggesting psychiatric benefits may go beyond weight loss.

📉 A 1 kg/m² decrease in BMI due to GLP-1 pathway activation was associated with an 18% lower risk of major depressive disorder and a 39% lower risk of bipolar disorder.

Nearly half of people who started GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic or Wegovy say they now drink less alcohol, and among heavier drinkers it was over half (54%), according to a new national US survey of 2,000+ adults published in JAMA Psychiatry. The drugs may act on the brain's craving and reward pathways.
