🔬 Millions of women with breast cancer may be able to avoid chemotherapy thanks to a new genomic test. The Optima trial, involving over 4,000 patients, found that those with a low score on the Prosigna test could safely be treated with hormone therapy alone, sparing them harsh side effects.
🔬 The Prosigna test analyzes 50 genes in tumor tissue to assess the risk of breast cancer returning within 10 years, allowing doctors to tailor treatment decisions. In the trial, 94% of low-score patients who skipped chemotherapy were recurrence-free after five years, compared to 95% of those who received it.
🔬 These findings, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual meeting, could transform healthcare guidelines by enabling more personalized medicine and reducing unnecessary toxicity for patients.
