Geoengineering could blunt El Niño’s fury | Simulations suggest that marine cloud brightening could weaken the climate pattern’s extremes Read Full Article #Geoengineering #ElNino #ClimateEngineering
☁️ Scientists propose geoengineering El Niño by adding aerosols to the atmosphere over a specific Pacific Ocean region. This could increase and brighten clouds, creating a cooling effect.

🔥 New computer simulations, published July 8 in Science Advances, suggest this method, inspired by wildfire particle effects, could reduce El Niño's strength and associated extreme weather.

🌊 Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB) simulations targeted past El Niño events (1997–1998 and 2015–2016) with high aerosol concentrations, showing weakened simulated El Niños.

⚠️ While promising, MCB faces significant engineering and societal hurdles, and researchers are cautious about climate intervention with many unanswered questions.
