Scientists report a bioplastic that could replace strofoam. Over a 36-week-long test, the foam version of a bioplastic cellulose diacetate (CDA) lost about 70 percent of its original mass, while the styrofoam showed zero degradation. The degradation rate is fastest of any plastic reported in ocean.

Photosynthetic organisms use quantum mechanical processes to harness the energy of the sun. When light is absorbed in a leaf, the electronic excitation energy is distributed over several states of each excited chlorophyll molecule; this is called a superposition of excited states.
