Republican rhetoric on mass shootings does not change public opinion on gun reform. While political statements often sway voter opinions on other issues, Americans appear to have deeply entrenched views on firearm policies that are not easily moved by alternative…
• 🇺🇸 New research in the Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law indicates that changing how politicians discuss mass shootings has minimal impact on public views regarding gun control, suggesting deeply entrenched opinions on firearm policies.

• 📊 A national online survey in fall 2024 involving 3,000 American adults found that reading about different political responses to fictional mass shootings (condolences, blame on mental illness/criminality, or support for "red flag" laws) did not statistically alter participants' support for six specific gun reform policies.

• 📈 The study, authored by Anil Menon, Isabel M. Perera, and Colleen L. Barry, suggests that elected officials may prioritize party loyalty over voter preferences on gun reform, potentially due to political polarization and the desire to maintain a strong stance on gun rights.

In Oregon, voters’ passage of gun control measure led to more firearms in the state. Nationally, 44,447 people died from firearm-related injuries in 2024. Sixty-two percent of those deaths were suicides, compared to an 80% suicide rate in Oregon Read Full…
🗳️ Oregon's 2022 gun control Measure 114, intended to limit gun purchases, has led to an estimated 63,000 additional background checks in the 18 months post-election.

📈 Background checks surged 157% after the measure passed, indicating a significant increase in firearm demand that researchers attribute to people buying guns in anticipation of future restrictions.

⏳ Despite the measure's passage, legal challenges and legislative delays mean its implementation is postponed until January 1, 2028, with researchers noting more guns are in Oregon now than if the measure had never passed.
